Pioneering Pamir Highway

14 Day Tour, from £3495 per person
Itinerary Dates
2018
03 Aug  -  16 Aug

The Pamir Highway is one of those roads which for many travellers has taken on an almost mythic status. Travelling through remote mountain terrain, the route was used by the merchants and traders of the ancient Silk Road, with a more formal road being formed during the Great Game era of the 19th century, and then a concerted engineering effort was made by the Soviet military between 1931 and 1934 in order to bring troops and provisions to this remote corner of the Soviet empire.

This group will travel from Dushanbe, Tajikistan’s charming capital, to Khorog from where the road hugs the Afghan border before turning north over the Akbaital Pass at 4,655 metres to Lake Karakul and on into Kyrgyzstan, finishing in Osh.This pioneering tour will explore remote areas where the roads will be of varied and at times of very poor quality and some of the accommodation will be basic with occasional shared rooms and facilities. We will also be spending nights at relatively high altitude (~2,500m) and crossing high mountain passes (up to 4,655m). Travel in Central Asia often requires flexibility in the itinerary due to local conditions, so whilst we will endeavour to visit all the sites listed in the itinerary it may be necessary for the local guide to make changes whilst on the ground.
