Explore the pristine frozen wildernesses that await north of the Arctic Circle, aboard a luxurious state-of-the-art, ice-strengthened vessel on an Arctic cruise. Begin your journey in Scotland, departing Edinburgh to head north to the far Arctic Circle. This expedition next spies land at Jan Mayen island and continues up to the remote Spitsbergen archipelago. Here watch out for polar bears and Arctic wildlife while taking the opportunity to discover the unique geology and history of the region’s early polar exploration first hand.

Board the luxury M/V Sea Spirit expedition ship in Edinburgh. Explore the ship and get comfortable as the ship slips its moorings and sail out of the harbour. (D)

ORKNEY ISLANDS
ORKNEY ISLANDS

Reach Kirkwall, the small capital town of the Orkney archipelago. Walk through this quiet town on a guided sightseeing tour and see its sandstone St Magnus Cathedral, considered the finest medieval building in the north of Scotland, the Bishop’s Palace and the Earl’s Palace. Depart Kirkwall and head into the west of Mainland, Orkney’s largest island. Sail through the gentle rolling landscape of Orkney and into the Neolithic Heartland of Orkney -  an area designated as a World Heritage Site due to its wealth of pre-historic archaeology. Pass the Standing Stones of Stenness and stop at the Ring of Brodgar -  a huge ceremonial circle of stones dating back almost 5000 years – and visit the 5000-year-old village of Skara Braer. (B,L,D)

Sail to the Fair Isle, where a huge number of birds inhabits its lush grasslands and spectacular cliffs. Walk across the island and spot northern fulmars, kittiwakes, northern gannets, puffins, and great and arctic skuas. (B,L,D)

FAROE ISLANDS: TORSHAVN

Stop at the capital city of the Faroe Island Torshavn and transfer to Kirkjubøur - the southernmost village on Streymoy.  This is the site of the country's most important historical site with the ruins of the Magnus Cathedral, whose construction is though to have begun in the late-thirteenth century. JAN MAYEN

Jan Mayen hosts landscapes of breath-taking beauty and the northernmost subaerial active volcano on the planet – the Beerenberg. The island is wild and uninhabited not including members of Norwegian weather station. Northern fulmars, Kittiwakes, and Brünich’s guillemots breeding on steep cliffs make this island a spectacular place for birdwatching. (B,L,D)

Start your expedition exploring the north-western part of Svalbard and marvel at the astounding scenery from the deck as you slip past the pristine landscapes. Panoramic vistas here boast deep fjords and narrow channels flanked by jagged snowy mountain peaks. (B,L,D)

Watch as immense tidewater glaciers calve, cracking with an ear-splitting noise and crashing into the icy, turquoise waters below. (B,L,D)

Keep eyes open for fascinating Arctic wildlife, both from the deck of the M/V Sea Spirit and from the smaller zodiac boats. Polar bears can be seen hunting on the pack ice or reindeer grazing on flowering tundra to Arctic foxes playing together and walrus lounging by the shores. (B,L,D)

Discover remnants of whaling camps, coal mining operations, old trappers' cabins, staging areas of historic attempts to discover the North Pole and abandoned polar research stations. (B,L,D)

After breakfast, disembark the M/V Sea Spirit in Longyearbyen, and transfer to the local airport for your flight back to the UK. (B)

M/V Sea Spirit

The ice-strengthened small all-suite expedition ship Sea Spirit (originally Renaissance V) was built in 1991 in Italy. From that time she has changed several operators and regions of navigation, cruising in Singapore, Alaska, Pacific Basin, Arctic and Antarctica. The vessel was modified in late 2010.

Providing spacious suites for accommodation of maximum of 114 passengers (the smallest suite is 20 sq. meters) the Sea Spirit at the same time features maneuverability and friendly atmosphere of small ships. All suites have private facilities and exterior views. Some of the suites feature private balconies for enjoying fantastic landscapes of the Arctic.
