Fly to Reykjavik and check in to your room at the Hotel Cabin in the city centre. Spend the afternoon exploring the pretty cafe-lined streets of Reykjavik at leisure, or take a stroll along the waterfront by the old harbour where fishing and whale-watching boats bob gently in their moorings.
This evening you'll be picked up from the hotel for a northern lights tour. Travel out of the city into the remote countryside away from artificial light for the best opportunities to view the flickering lights that dance across the night sky. Experienced guides know the best spots depending on the weather forecasts and take time to share the folklore and science that surrounds the phenomenon.
Spend half of today enjoying a guided sightseeing tour of the capital city. Speak to a Regent Iceland Specialist to book either a morning or afternoon departure, depending on whether you'd like a lie-in after a late night searching for the northern lights.
This tour picks you up from your hotel and takes you to see many of Reykjavik's top visitor attractions and cultural highlights. Stand at the foot of the iconic Hallgrímskirkja church, watch the sun glint off the striking glass panels of the Harpa concert hall, stroll through the shopping district and the city centre, head down to the old fishing harbour and take in an elevated view of the cityscape from the Perlan Dome. Today's epic excursion travels out of the city and discovers South Iceland's famous trio of natural wonders; Gullfoss, Strokkur and Thingvellir.
Water crashes over Gullfoss waterfall with such sheer power that the thundering sound produced can be heard before even the white cloud of steam rising from the gaping river mouth is noticed. Pack a waterproof coat - viewing platforms offer an up-close view of the immense waterfall and provide spectacular photo opportunities.
The sky-blue waters of Strokkur Geyser steam, bubble and hiss before erupting suddenly and spectacularly into the air every ten minutes, heated to boiling point from within the rift between the tectonic plates that cracks open deep beneath the earth's surface.
Game of Thrones fans may even recognise the rugged landscapes of Thingvellir National Park from Jon Snow's explorations north of the wall, as the rift where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates pull apart has been used during filming. (B)
