Discover the natural beauty and fascinating culture of Japan on this 13-day small group tour. Packed with experiences intended to give you an insight into life in Japan, such as having dinner with a geisha in Kyoto and browsing the stalls at Omicho Market, this tour is perfect for travellers eager to gain a deeper understanding of this wonderful country. Travel by train to drink in as much of the country as possible and even ride the world-famous bullet train and learn for yourself just how fast it is. With time in some of Japan's major cities, including Tokyo and Kyoto, along with small villages, you will gain an overview of the country as a whole. Throughout the tour, you'll also have the chance to sample some truly delicious meals, whether it's fresh seafood in Kanazawa or your farewell dinner in Osaka.

DAY 1
TOKYO
TOKYO

Land Tokyo and transfer into the city centre. The remainder of the day is at leisure to explore. The hotel is located in Shiodome region close to Hamarikyu Gardens and JR Shiodome Station. Please note: there is the option to book a 2-night pre-tour package if you wish to explore the city further. 

DAY 2
TOKYO
TOKYO

This morning head out on the efficient public transport system to discover Tokyo. Visits today will include Meiji Shrine which is popular with traditional Japanese weddings and Roppongi district to enjoy panoramic views of the city from the Observation Deck. After lunch head to Asakusa, Tokyo's old town to soak up the atmosphere of old Tokyo. Visit Sensoji Temple which is the city's oldest temple and explore Nakamise shopping street to sample local snacks. (B/L)

DAY 3
TOKYO TO HAKONE
TOKYO TO HAKONE

Depart Tokyo and drive to Hakone. There is a chance of catching a glimpse of Mt Fuji today, however she is a notoriously shy mountain so the weather needs to be very clear. Enjoy lunch followed by a boat trip on Lake Ashi to Togendai. The lake is actually a volcanic crater created by an eruption 3000 years ago. Disembark and take the ropeway towards Owakudani to enjoy easy walking along the various trails - why not try an egg boiled in the volcanic hot springs. Tonight will be spent in a traditional ryokan-style hotel where you will enjoy a traditional Japaneses dinner and time to sample the on-site onsen which use mineral water from the naturally heated springs. DAY 4
HAKONE TO TAKAYAMA
HAKONE TO TAKAYAMA

Depart Hakone and board a bullet train bound for Nagoya. Change onto a local 'wideview' train for one of the most scenic journeys in Japan winding through tall mountains and stunning gorges. A lunch box will be provided onboard. End the journey in Takayama and after checking in to the hotel enjoy the afternoon at leisure. The hotel is well located and offers access to the Hida Folk Village and the Hida Takayama Museum of Art. (B/L)

DAY 5
TAKAYAMA
TAKAYAMA

After breakfast head to Takayama Jinya, also known as Historical Government House, the only surviving government building which now serves as a musuem containing tatami mat rooms and even an interrogation room. Continue to the Miyagawa morning market which is one of the country's largest morning markets and only open to independent farmers and craftsmen. Enjoy lunch followed by a visit to the Festival Floats Museum which is home to floats from the Takayama Festival. Stroll through Takayama's beautifully preserved old town. (B/L)

DAY 6
TAKAYAMA TO KANAZAWA
TAKAYAMA TO KANAZAWA

Depart Takayama and travel towards Kanazawa. Along the way a stop will be made at the village of Shirakawago which is famous for traditional UNESCO-world heritage gassho-zukuri farmhouses. Enjoy lunch in the village before driving to Kanazawa. (B/L)

DAY 7
KANAZAWA
KANAZAWA

Spend the day exploring Kanazawa using public transport. Start the day at Omicho Market which has been the heart of the town for nearly 300 years. We suggest sampling some of the excellent seafood here as this coastal town has a very fresh supply. From the market travel to Kenroku-en Garden regarded as one of Japan's most beautiful before spending time in the iconic 21st Century Art Museum. The day ends with time in the Nagamachi Samurai District to visit the Nomura Samurai House which is a traditional Japanese home. Walk back to the hotel for the evening at leisure. (B/L)

DAY 8
KANAZAWA TO KYOTO
KANAZAWA TO KYOTO

Depart Kanazawa and board a local train bound for historic Kyoto. Arrive and head for a tasty lunch. This afternoon experience a traditional Japanese tea ceremony with a tea master who will demonstrate the intricacies of this ancient art. From here wind your way through the narrow alleyways of the Gion district which is home to the city's Geisha community. Dinner tonight will be at a local restaurant with a private maiko or geisha host. The meal will be accompanied by music from a shamisen (Japanese stringed instrument) and there is the opportunity to ask questions about the geisha world. This is a very special opportunity to learn firsthand the life of a geisha. Return to the hotel. (B/L/D)

DAY 9
KYOTO
KYOTO

Today will be spent exploring Kyoto. Travel to Nijo Castle and take a walk through the stunning gardens and across the buildings 'chirping' nightingale floors. Continue to Kinkakuji, primarily referred to as the Golden Pavilion which was originally built as a retirement villa for the Shogun and is now a Buddhist temple. Drive to Arashiyama for lunch before boarding a rickshaw for a ride to the famous bamboo grove. See how the stalks seem to continue in all directions and create a tunnel-like walkway. Enjoy a leisurely stroll through the grove and take in the Nonomiya Shinto shrine, an historic purification shrine. Return to the hotel for the evening at lesiure. (B/L)  

DAY 10
KYOTO & NARA
KYOTO & NARA

Today will be spent in Nara. Once the country capital for 74 years, Nara boasts 8 UNESCO World Heritage Sites and picturesque parkland which is home to an abundance of tame deer. Explore historic Todaiji Temple which is home to Japan's largest Buddha statue before continuing to Kasuga Taisha shrine. The site is famous for housing hundreds of bronze and stone lanterns which have been donated by worshippers over the years. Enjoy lunch before heading back to Kyoto and Fushimi ward to visit Fushimi Inari Shrine. The site is famous for its thousands of torii gates leading up through the sacred forest of Mount Inari. Return to the hotel. (B/L)

DAY 11
KYOTO TO HIROSHIMA
KYOTO TO HIROSHIMA

This morning board a bullet train bound for UNESCO World Heritage Himeji Castle. Also called White Heron Castle, the building survives as one of the country's 12 original castles and is regarded by many as the finest in Japan. Enjoy lunch before returning to the station and boarding the onward train to Hiroshima. Upon arrival head to the Peace Memorial Park which sits in the centre of the city and covers over 120,000 sq metres. Visit the Peace Memorial Museum which covers the history of Hiroshima and teaches about the devastating effects the A-bomb had on the city. End the day at the hotel and enjoy the evening at leisure. DAY 12
HIROSHIMA TO OSAKA
HIROSHIMA TO OSAKA

This morning take a train and ferry across to Miyajima Island, home to the famous floating torii gate. The island is regarded as extremely sacred and has been a holy place of Shintoism for generations. Return to the station and board a bullet train to Osaka. Tonight enjoy a farewell dinner as a group. DEPARTURE

Today is free at leisure until you are transferred to Osaka airport. Note: there is the option to book a 2-night extension package if you wish explore Osaka further. (B)
