Arrive in Tashkent, capital of Uzbekistan and transfer to your centrally located hotel. The remainder of the day is at leisure. (B)

TASHKENT

Explore the cosmopolitan capital of Tashkent and discover how its location on the old Silk Road still influences its history today. Look past the Soviet-era architecture and discover ancient mausoleums and imposing madrassahs as well as the large squares and modern monuments. In the evening enjoy a local music performance. Transfer to the station to board the train and enjoy dinner on board. (B,L,D)

SHAKHRISABZ

Waking in rural Uzbekistan you head today in to the mountains to visit some Uzbek villages and learn a little of their ways and traditions. In the afternoon your train brings you to Shakrisabz, birthplace of Amir Timur and home to some impressive architecture. Back on board enjoy a tasting of Uzbek wines. (B,L,D)

SAMARKAND
SAMARKAND
Arrive in Samarkand, one of the most beautiful cities in the world during Tamerlane’s time. Visit Registan Square, the medieval commercial centre of Samarkand, and discover the impressive collection of Central Asian architecture. Spend time at Samarkand’s excavation sites of Afrosiab and the tombs of Shah-i-zinda (the living king). At the end of the day transfer to a local 4-star hotel in Samarkand for two nights. (B,L,D)

In Samarkand today visit the Ulug Beg Observatory to see the marvellous instruments created centuries ago for plotting the stars as well as the Bibi Khanum Mosque, a building of staggering size, now partly in ruins after many earthquakes. In Samarkand today you will also meet some of the city’s craftsmen, take a tour of a silk carpet manufactory, and enjoy a visit to an Uzbek family to see paper being made from mulberry bark. Your day will also include a visit to the tomb of Amir Timur himself, lying beneath a large turquoise dome. (B,L,D)

SAMARKAND TO KHIVA

The morning is at leisure for you to explore Samarkand a little further, perhaps stroll around some of the squares or enjoy a cup of tea. Around noon you will head back to the station to board the train which will depart across the desert to the ancient city of Khiva. Overnight on the train. (B,L,D)

Today you will visit the oasis of Khiva, standing at the mighty town walls with their gates and bastions of mud brick you feel transported into another world. On the sightseeing tour of the oasis enjoy take in its exotic atmosphere. Its palaces, mosques, minarets, mausoleums, and madrassahs represent one of the best-preserved ensembles of medieval oriental urban architecture in the world. This afternoon, visit the Konya Ark Citadel and the Islam Hodha Minaret. Dinner will be in a traditional restaurant. Overnight in a hotel. (B,L,D) 

DAY 9
KHIVA
KHIVA

The second day in Khiva really gives you time to explore this ancient city. Enjoy lunch in the surroundings of the former Emir’s Summer Palace. Later in the afternoon transfer back to the station to board the train and head on to Bukhara overnight. Overnight on the train. (B,L,D)

BUKHARA
BUKHARA

Located in the middle of the Kyzylkum Desert, Bukhara has some one thousand architectural monuments recalling the golden age of the Great Silk Route. Exotic spices, furs, and especially silk were stored and traded in the city’s caravanserais. Your tour will take in Bukhara’s old city (UNESCO World Heritage), where you see the almost fifty-metre tall Poi Kalon Minaret and the Lyabi Hauz Ensemble - more magnificent madrassahs with detailed tile work. Later head for the courtyard of one of the madrassahs where you can enjoy a performance of local dances, and a presentation of colourful national costumes with musical accompaniment. DAY 11
BUKHARA
BUKHARA

Bukhara, also referred to as Sherif (the noble one) from the 9th century when it was the capital of the Samanid state, a time when the city flourished with scholars and artisans who left behind an astonishing collection of architecture. In the morning, we drive you to the splendid Mir-e-Arab Madrassah and the Samanid Mausoleum, one of Central Asia’s most beautiful architectural treasures. Afterwards, tour the massive Ark Citadel, a city within a city that was once the seat of government of Bukhara’s former rulers. There you view the Throne Room, after which you visit the last emir’s Summer Residence. Overnight in a hotel. (B,L,D)

DAY 12
BUKHARA TO TASHKENT
BUKHARA TO TASHKENT

Have the morning free to explore Bukhara and perhaps pick up some last-minute souvenirs before getting the train back to Tashkent where you will be transferred to the hotel for your final night. Overnight in a hotel. (B,L,D)

DAY 13
FLY TO THE UK

Transfer to the airport for the flight back to the UK. (B)
