Tour Itinerary

Fly to Tokyo.

Welcome to Tokyo, Japan’s ultra modern capital. Meet the guide and transfer to the hotel. Enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure. This evening enjoy a welcome dinner at a local restaurant. (D)

This morning head to Meiji Shrine by public transportation. Dedicated to the deified spirits of the former Emperor and his wife, Meiji Shrine is one of the most famous Shinto shrines in Japan. Continue to the pulsating centre of Tokyo's youth culture, exploring some of Tokyo's latest trends and fashions in Shibuya, one of the most famous shopping locations in Tokyo. Next, visit Kokyo Gaien, the plaza gardens outside the Imperial Palace before heading to Asakusa District. Asakusa is home to charming shops and restaurants, not to mention the oldest temple in the city, Sensoji, entered through the Thunder Gate which is indicated by a large red lantern. Walk along Nakamise Street, a centuries old souvenir street of 96 shop stalls, do some shopping for that perfect souvenir or pick up a local delicacy. End the day with an incredible panoramic view of the city at Tokyo Skytree which is the tallest free-standing broadcasting tower in the world. Take in the landscape of the city you’ve gotten to explore, before heading back to the hotel. (B/L)

Enjoy the day free at leisure to explore the city further at your own pace. (B)

This morning board the Shinkansen to Takayama. Enjoy the views as the train zooms through the incredible Japanese Alps. Arrive Takayama and visit a traditional Hida folk village for an insight into what mountain life was like back in the day.  Tonight rest your head at a traditional ryokan complete with tatami mat floors and sliding doors straight out of The Last Samurai. Enjoy a traditional Kyoto-style Hida kaiseki multi-course dinner. (B/D)

This morning visit the bustling morning riverside markets before exploring Takayama Jinya, the last remaining government outpost from the time of Samurais and Shoguns. Round it all up with a sampling of the good stuff at a local sake brewery before jumping on the train to Hiroshima. Tonight enjoy Okonomiyaki, a traditional local speciality savoury pancake for dinner. (B/D)

The city of Hiroshima is also referred to as the "City of Water." Spend the afternoon at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. The A-Bomb Dome, also known as the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, is what remains of the former Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall. When the bomb exploded, it was one of the few buildings to remain standing and remains so today. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the A-Bomb Dome is a tangible link to Hiroshima's unique past. Enjoy the remainder of the afternoon free at leisure. (B)

Start the day with a visit to Itsuku-shima-jinja Shrine, located on Miyajima Island, a unique shrine that looks as if it is floating in the sea. The main shrine with its red pillars and white walls, along with the iconic symbol of Miyajima, the floating torii gate, create a wonderful contrast with the dark green woods and deep blue sea. After spending the day at Miyajima, travel by Shinkansen from Hiroshima to Shin-Osaka. Upon arrival, head to the hotel in Osaka. Check in and enjoy time at leisure. (B)

Today starts with a visit to Osaka Castle which was built in 1583 as the intended capital of Japan before the capital was moved to Edo (now known as Tokyo). Continue to the Osaka Museum of Housing and Living which has re-created buildings and streets that show what life was like in Osaka in the past. This afternoon visit Dotonbori which is located along the south bank of the Dotonbori-gawa Canal and where masses of neon lights and the atmosphere of the 17th century coexist. Walk through the Dotonbori area and head to Umeda Sky Building and up to the observatory. Enjoy breathtaking views as far afield as Awaji Island. The basement of the building houses Takimi-Koji gourmet street which you may wish to explore before finishing your day and returning to the hotel. (B)

DAY 10

Head to Kyoto and visit Fushimi Inari Shrine which was used in the movie Memoirs of a Geisha. It is home to over 10,000 red torii gates which form a path up the mountain behind the temple. Next visit Sanju-sangendo, a temple in eastern Kyoto which is famous for its 1001 statues of Kannon, the goddess of mercy. Enjoy the remainder of the afternoon at leisure. (B)

DAY 11

See the highlights of Kyoto starting with Kinkakuji Temple, also known as the Golden Pavilion. The grounds are lush and expansive and this beautiful wooden structure has been coated in gold leaf. Continue to UNESCO-registered Nijo Castle which is surrounded by stunning gardens. The castle is full of spectacular architectural details including the ‘chirping’ floors which were designed as an additional security measure for the castle. Next, head to the breathtaking Heian Shrine, a marvellous shrine complex that’s a bit younger than other historic sites of Kyoto. Enter through a massive red torii gate into spacious grounds and admire the beautiful structure with its bright vermillion columns and complimentary jade tiled roofs surrounded by cherry trees. Last stop for the day is Kiyomizudera Temple also known as the Pure Water Temple. First, take in the majestic views from the 13 metre high veranda before further exploring the grounds. Take a sip from one of the three streams of fresh mountain water, which will grant you fortune in love, studies or elongate your life, but don’t drink from all 3 as that’s considered greedy! Finally, return to the hotel for the evening. (B)

DAY 12

Enjoy a free day in Kyoto to explore further. (B)

DAY 13

Rise early for the Shinkansen journey back to Tokyo. Check into the hotel and enjoy the afternoon free to explore the city for some last minute sightseeing or shopping. This evening enjoy a farewell dinner at a local restaurant. (B/D)
