The former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan lies along the route of the ancient Silk Road and is a beautiful, mountainous country where the nomadic tribes of Central Asia have crossed paths over centuries. On this small-group tour you will discover traditional nomadic cultures, stay in a yurt camp on the high steppe and get to learn the art of felt-making. See petroglyphs and the iconic Burana Tower and spend time at Son Kul and Issy-Kul Lakes before returning to the cosmopolitan capital of Bishkek.

DAY 1
FLY TO BISHKEK

DAY 2
BISHKEK
BISHKEK

Arrive in Bishkek and transfer to the hotel. This afternoon meet the local guide to explore the city starting with Ala-Too main square and the monument of Peace and Friendship. Visit the open air art gallery showcasing paintings by local artists, continue to the State Museum of Fine Arts and take a walk along Erkindik Boulevard for the chance to meet residents of all ages and see the Statue of Manas which is located in front of the Grand Philharmonic Hall. Enjoy a welcome dinner at a local restaurant. (B/D)
 

DAY 3
ALA ARCHA NATIONAL PARK
ALA ARCHA NATIONAL PARK

Today it's time to don walking shoes as you head out to Bishkek’s breathtaking Ala-Archa Alpine National Park which is located in the picturesque Tian-Shan Mountains. Enjoy an easy 2-4hr hike through the gorge followed by a picnic lunch in the park. On the way back to Bishkek stop at the Ata-Beyit Memorial Complex. (B/L)

BISHKEK TO TOKTOGUL
BISHKEK TO TOKTOGUL

This morning, transfer to Toktogul, a journey which crosses the Too-Ashuu pass and through the Suusamyr Valley with its beautiful mountains, horses and nomad yurts. Lunch will be taken on the way. Upon arrival at Toktogul enjoy free time on the reservoir shore or time permitting hike to the panorama. Dinner is taken at the guesthouse. (B/L/D)

TOKTOGUL TO SARY CHELEK
TOKTOGUL TO SARY CHELEK

After breakfast at the guesthouse depart to Arkyt village located in Sary-Chelek Biosphere Reserve which lies in the Arkyt Gorge, a relatively small mountain hollow in the Chatkal Mountains. The reserve is home to more than 1000 species of plants, 160 species of birds and 34 species of mammals and due to its relatively mild climate a significant part of the reserve occupies walnut, apple and pear forests. Upon arrival visit the local museum and explore the reserve. This morning drive to Chychkan Gorge which sits at an altitude of 2200 metres above sea level. Chychkan in the Kyrgyz language means "little mouse”. The slopes in Chychkan gorge are covered by Tien Shan spruce, juniper, wild barberry bushes and brambles. Arrive, check-into the guesthouse and spend the rest of the day exploring the area on a guided hiking tour. (B/L/D)

CHYCHKAN GORGE TO SON KUL LAKE
CHYCHKAN GORGE TO SON KUL LAKE

Today drive through the mountains passing the villages of Kyzyl-Oi and Chaek to Son-Kul, a mountain lake in the Central Tian Shan Range which sits at 3016 metres above sea level. This freshwater lake is full of fish and the area is a wonderful place for local herders and their herds of yak, sheep and horses to take advantage of lush summer pastures. Today will be spent watching the Kyrgyz herders tending to their cattle and making national dishes and handicrafts such as felt carpets. Spend the night in the yurt camp which is owned by a local family. (B/L/D)

DAY 9
SON KUL LAKE
SON KUL LAKE

Spend a full day at Son-Kol. Observe how local people spend the day and enjoy an easy hiking tour to the nearby petroglyphs. There will also be a display of traditional Kyrgyz horse games before transferring to a second night at an alternative yurt camping which boasts modern facilities. (B/L/D)

SON KUL LAKE TO BOKONBAEVO
SON KUL LAKE TO BOKONBAEVO

This morning drive to Bokonbaevo village on the south shore of Issyk-Kul Lake, the second largest Alpine lake in the world after Lake Titicaca. Stop at a yurt maker’s village to learn about this tradition, its importance as well as the techniques of yurt making. Continue to Bokonbaevo village, check in to family run guesthouse and enjoy a tasty lunch before an afternoon walking tour around the area, lakeshore and village - bring your swimwear if you fancy a dip in the lake. DAY 11
BOKONBAEVO TO KARAKOL
BOKONBAEVO TO KARAKOL

Start the day with a hike to enjoy the great views at Skazka or Fairy-Tale Canyon followed by a fascinating eagle hunting and archery demonstration. Drive through Barskoon Gorge which is lined with Tien-Shan spruce trees and is famous for cascading waterfalls. On the journey see unusual monuments such as a Soviet truck mounted on a plinth and a bust of the first cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin before the gorge opens out to offer snowy peaks of the surrounding mountains. Trek to one of these waterfalls and enjoy a picnic lunch. This afternoon arrive into Karakol and take a sightseeing tour to the Russian church made entirely of wood and the Dungan mosque ending with a visit to the shop One Village-One Product which offers handmade food and felt products produced by local women in the Issyk Kul region. Enjoy dinner at the guesthouse. (B/L/D)

DAY 12
JYRGALAN VALLEY
JYRGALAN VALLEY

Today will be spent exploring the Jyrgalan valley which sits hidden away close to the border of Kazakhstan. The drive passes through several tiny authentic villages surrounded by sharply inclined peaks with snowmelt rivers carving their way between jagged peaks. This area is not often visited by tourists, the people are very friendly and there is definitely great scenery for photography. After a nice lunch at a guesthouse head out on a hiking tour to Tulpar-Tash stone, a huge 8-metre high boulder painted with ancient drawings the significance of which scientists are still debating. This evening return to Karakol and take dinner at a Dungan House with Dungan food specialties. (B/L/D)
 

DAY 13
KARAKOL TO CHOLPON ATA
KARAKOL TO CHOLPON ATA

This morning drive to Cholpon-Ata town with a stop en route at Jarkynbaevo village to visit Agro Farm Kyzyl-Tash. Take an excursion around the farm to see the various animals, horses and visit the Shepherd’s Museum which is dedicated to the shepherd's way of life. This afternoon drive to Cholpon-Ata and visit the open air Petroglyphs Museum and enjoy boating on the lake. (B/D)

 

 

DAY 14
CHOLPON ATA TO CHON KEMIN
CHOLPON ATA TO CHON KEMIN

Today will be spent exploring the beautiful Chon-Kemin valley with an overnight stay in Tarsuu village. Meet your local host family and enjoy a home cooked lunch before various cultural activities such as a felt making show, a cradle show and a cooking class to prepare the Kyrgyz national bread Boorsok. In the evening a delicious homemade dinner will be served on the terrace opening out to panoramic views of the mountains and village. Enjoy a Manas performance over the campfire. (B/L/D)

DAY 15
CHON KEMIN TO BISHKEK
CHON KEMIN TO BISHKEK

After a nice village style breakfast enjoy a horse and cart ride around the village offering opportunities to stop and visit local homes to get more of an idea about their traditional way of life and maybe visit the village school. People are extremely kind and hospitable in this village. Depart and drive to Bishkek with a top en route in Tokmok town stop to visit Burana Tower, the small archaeological museum and the open-air museum of Balbals (carved stone warriors). This afternoon enjoy free time before a farewell dinner at a local restaurant. (B/D)
