Southern Vietnam is a region of contrasts. Saigon, or Ho Chi Minh City, is the modern commercial heart of Vietnam and its largest city, a place where motorcycles match people in number. But the region is also home to the magnificent Mekong Delta where life still ticks along at a considerably slower pace.
Rise early to explore the various floating markets the region is famed for: watch the small boats laden with fruit, vegetables and other merchandise dispensing their wares. For beach time there is a choice of Phan Thiet and nearby Mui Ne with its luxury resorts or the quieter and still fairly undeveloped island of Phu Quoc in the Gulf of Thailand, an island paradise of warm turquoise waters and great snorkelling and scuba diving.
