Although it is the largest and most populous of the South Caucasian republics, Azerbaijan, which lies on the western shore of the Caspian Sea, remains the least explored by foreign visitors.

Baku has a distinctly Eastern feel with carpet shops, colourful spice markets and sun-baked streets. Enter the arched gates of the Old Town and explore the 15th century Palace of the Shirvan Shahs, with its mausolea, mosques and terraced royal buildings. Baku is a modern and cosmopolitan city with new restaurants and bars opening by the minute. Take a stroll along the seafront promenade before finding a café in central Fountain Square and watching the world go by.
