Holidays in Estonia featuring Cycling in Saaremaa with Regent Holidays

Cycling Holiday on Saaremaa (9 Days)

Holidays in the Baltics - Tour Itineraries

A 9 day cycling tour also featuring Tallinn and Kuressaare from £650 per person

Cycling in the Baltics is a wonderful and easy experience, especially out of the major cities, where deep forests, quiet country lanes, telegraph poles with giant stork nests perched on top and fields scattered with small wooden houses await exploration.

This itinerary begins with several days in Tallinn, the bustling Estonian capital, before continuing southwest to the beautiful island of Saaremaa. Saaremaa has preserved all that is best about old Estonia. With little traffic and flat, well-maintained roads, it is the perfect rural setting for cycling. Each night is spent in one of many homely farmhouses, often equipped with saunas to ease your tired muscles.

Please note that during dry summer months - the roads can become dusty.

Day 3 Tallinn to Kuressaare. Take the bus to Kuressaare and transfer to hotel for overnight stay

Kuressaare to Kärla (40km). Morning transfer from hotel to bike rental office for collection of bikes etc. Today’s cycle is around 40 kilometres and takes you from Kuressaare through Loode Oak Forest and the fishing village of Nasva. You can stop at Järve beach and sand dunes, a popular place for swimming.

Another worthwhile stop is at Tehumardi Battlefield, known for the fierce battle between the Soviet and German armies in 1944, where about 3,000 soldiers lost their lives. Visit the attractive renaissance-style Kärla church before arriving at Männi-Praakli farmhouse for overnight stay

Day 5

Kärla to Panga. Today’s route takes you from Karujärve to Panga via Mustjala (35 kilometres). Here you can see one of the highest bluffs on the island - the Panga Cliff, situated at the end of the Kuressaare to Võhma Road, close to Panga village. Overnight in Panga Farmhouse

Day 6

Panga to Hiievälja. Continuing along the north coast, today’s cycle is around 37 kilometres. You will have an opportunity to visit some of the most beautiful beaches on the island. Overnight at Välja Farmhouse

Day 7

Hiievälja to Kuressaare. Return to Kuressaare (40 kilometres) via the Kaali Meteorite Crater, which was formed 3,500 years ago. You can also visit Karja Church, Saaremaa's smallest medieval church. Karja church is famous for its
decorative elements and some of the most interesting wall frescoes still remain. You will cycle past the famous Angla Windmills, situated at the 32km signpost on the Upa to Lesi Road. This is the only remaining windmill hill on Saaremaa. In 1925, Angla was home to 13 farms and there were nine windmills, now only five remain. Return bikes in Kuressaare and overnight at hotel.
