The
dazzling diversity of Central Asia has drawn travellers for centuries. The colourful
cohabitation of Asian and Russian, Islamic and Communist, ancient and modern create
the drama of life in Central Asia today - a bonus to the modern traveller. Kazakhstan's
vast eerie plains are fringed to the south by some of the world's most beautiful
mountains, the Tien Shan. Kyrgyzstan
is a land of mountains peopled by semi-nomadic groups, elusive large cats
and the rare Marco Polo sheep. In Turkmenistan
a flavour of Persia reaches us from the colourful hand-woven carpets at the Sunday
Bazaar.
In Uzbekistan
the colours of the minarets and domes echo the yellow and blue of desert and sky
and the vivid green of the oases. In Tajikistan,
our new edition to our Central Asia programme, you can explore valleys, ancient
cities and remote mountain communities on a cycle trip or jeep tour. Or visit
the stunning Pamir Mountains.
Tajikistan:
Currently the Tajik government has insisted that visa
applicants from the UK present themselves in person
at the nearest Tajik embassy in order to obtain a
visa for Tajikistan. Unfortunately for people resident
in the UK, the nearest embassy for Tajikistan is in
Brussels, although visas can also be arranged at the
Tajik embassy in Tashkent if you wished to combine
Tajikistan with an Uzbekistan tour.
Therefore we would still like to present to you what
we can potentially offer travellers for this destination
and will update you as soon as the current situation
changes.
