I always recommend even in winter or summer take the local train from Riga Railway Station (watch our for pick pockets here though!) to Jurmala. This is Latvia's Riviera, where faded elegant wooden villas edge tree-lined streets guiding you to the wide, sandy beaches. The sea is sometimes frozen in the winter, which is an incredible sight to see!

Places of Interest in Latvia

About Latvia

Jump into a car and tour this gem of a country at your own pace and discover historic towns, ancient fortifications, endless forests, sparkling lakes and the deserted Baltic coast.

Latvia definitively shook off decades of isolation as part of the Soviet Union by declaring independence in 1991 and becoming a member of the European Union in 2004. You will encounter a country and its people which embraces its new-found freedoms and exhibits a fun-loving side and  a passion for the outdoors.

Be enchanted by Riga with its collection of Baroque and Art Nouveau buildings and café culture. Away from the city uncover a time of romantic legends and heroic figures with medieval castles and opulent grand residences and take a brisk stroll along the dramatic windswept coastline with its vast sandy and secluded beaches. Take in medieval Cesis with its wooden buildings, cobbled streets and impressive castle and admire Baroque Rundale Palace, conceived by the architect who designed the Hermitage. Stay in distinguished manor houses and pamper yourself at a spa retreat in the resort of Jurmala.
