Lithuania combines historic cities and a rich cultural heritage with forests, lakes, wetlands and one of the most spectacular stretches of the Baltic coast. Many Lithuania holidays begin in Vilnius, an inviting and highly walkable capital with one of the largest surviving medieval Old Towns in Northern and Eastern Europe. Its cobbled streets reveal an impressive collection of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture, alongside independent cafés, restaurants, galleries and a lively contemporary cultural scene. Climb to one of the city's viewpoints for a panorama across its church towers and red-tiled rooftops, or explore creative neighbourhoods such as Užupis.

From Vilnius, travel to nearby Trakai, where its striking red-brick island castle rises from the waters of Lake Galvė. Further west, Kaunas combines an attractive Old Town with distinctive interwar modernist architecture, recognised by UNESCO, while the port city of Klaipėda provides the gateway to Lithuania's Baltic coast.

One of the great highlights of a holiday to Lithuania is the Curonian Spit, a slender peninsula of immense sand dunes, pine forests, beaches and traditional fishing settlements separating the Baltic Sea from the Curonian Lagoon. Explore the colourful village of Nida, walk through forests and across towering dunes, or spend time on long stretches of white-sand beach. The area is also an important habitat for migrating birds and is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Elsewhere, Lithuania's forests and lakes make it ideal for leisurely exploration. Visit the atmospheric Hill of Crosses near Šiauliai, discover historic manor houses and small towns, or escape into the country's national parks for walking, cycling and time on the water.
