Camel trains emerge
from the shimmering heat of the Karakum desert
which covers much of the country and Turkmen nomads,
whose life has changed little in centuries, move
their sheep and horses from one pasture to another.
Lovers of ancient cultures will relish the cities
of Turkmenistan - Nisa, the former capital of
the Parthian dynasty, with the nearby underground
lake at Bakharden where you can take the healing
waters and the romantic oasis town of Merv, where
a collection of fortress cities has risen and
fallen and now only their ruins remain.
Ashghabad,
the capital, has a colourful Sunday Bazaar where
locals in traditional costume haggle for the best
price for a carpet, camel or Lada. You become
the local entertainment, drawing a crowd, when
you join in the bargaining for one of the unique
rugs
