Most visitors to Vilnius, the capital
of Lithuania, fall in love with the city because of
its diversity of influences
from Germany, Poland, Russia and Scandinavia. However,
one influence is difficult to explain and that is the
statue of legendary American rock musician, Frank Zappa
on Kalinausko in the city centre.
Turning to more traditional sights,
the Old Town is the largest within the Baltics, and
a maze of narrow, winding streets with a church at virtually
every turn. Kaunas, the capital from 1920-1939 when
Vilnius was occupied by the Poles, considers itself
more Lithuanian than Vilnius and has an impressive fort
on the outskirts. There is even a Devil's Museum including
representations of Hitler and Stalin.
The coastal resort of Palanga
is famous for its amber which is washed up on the coast.
You may be surprised to know that amber is not only
honey-coloured but also blue, black and white.
