St Petersburg City Breaks
Make for Nevsky Prospekt, a good starting point to discover many of the highlights of this city of opulent palaces and sparkling waterways. The Hermitage could absorb all of your time, but don't miss imposing Peter and Paul Fortress, St Isaac's Cathedral and the battleship Aurora, the launchpad of the Russian Revolution. Hunt for Communist kitsch in the Souvenir Market, savour vodka and caviar or a blini from a corner kiosk and get a new perspective of the city from a canal trip. Canal-side haunts are fun in the evening or take in a performance at the opulent Mariinsky Theatre.

Regent Recommends...
Calling all chocaholics! After all that culture in the Hermitage and St Isaac's, revive yourself with a visit to the confectionery department of the Moskva restaurant. Salivate as you watch the production of handmade chocolate fruit delicacies, based on 'Barry Callebaut' style Swiss chocolate and then grab yourself chocolate made with vodka and black pepper or pistachio nuts and cinnamon. For a memorable souvenir buy a loved one chocolate flavoured with cigars! Can't get enough chocolate? Then head for 'Dominique's' chocolate lab at the Grand Hotel Europe and order a chocolate figurine based on your own sketch.
Calling all transport enthusiasts
If the Hermitage and grandeur of St Petersburg gets too much, then discover St Petersburg’s Soviet side. There are plenty of other museums and places to visit. We like the Museum of Railway Technology, hidden behind the dilapidated Warsaw (Varshavsky) Station, one of Russia's finest collections of Soviet steam trains, all of which have been lovingly restored by volunteers. A stroll along the platforms is a stroll through Soviet history: see the L-2298 locomotive with Lenin and Stalin on its nose and the SO-2413, with the slogan Onwards towards communism!
