Classic Turkmenistan Tour - Central Asia (10 Days)

Holidays in Central Asia- Tour Itineraries

An 10 day extensive tour of Turkmenistan from £795 per person

Possibly the most reclusive of the Central Asian States, Turkmenistan is a large desert nation whose future is tied with the vast oil and gas reserves it holds. In the years since independence tourism has been largely overlooked and it remains the most bureaucratic of the Central Asian states. For those who make the journey however, they will be afforded a glimpse at a fascinating country which receives very few visitors.

The old and new sights of Ashgabat such as the Nissa Fortress and the golden statue of Turkmenistan's president, Niyazov (aka Turkmenbashi, Father of the Turkmen People) are a fascinating start to a trip which will introduce the beautiful landscapes, villages and people of this little known nation.

Suggested Itinerary in Turmenistan
Day 1 Arrive Ashgabat and transfer to the Hotel Nissa. After a rest commence a guided city tour of the capital which will include the Arch of Neutrality and the Independance Monument.
Day 2 This morning continue sightseeing in the capital (including the National Museum) before taking an excursion out to the nearby Parthian site of Nissa. From Nissa head north into the Karakum desert, where you will visit the Semi-Normadic village of Erbent before spending the night camping besides one of the burning gas craters.
Day 3 Today continue the desert adventure with a visit to Damla Village in the heart of the Karakum desert. Spend the day immersing yourself into the traditional desert life of the local people and spend the night in the home of a local chief.
Day 4

Today depart the desert and make the long journet back to Ashgabat. After arriving back into the Hotel Nissa, enjoy the rest of the day and evening at leisure.

Day 5

This morning transfer to the airport and fly to Mary, the country's 3rd largest city. Enjoy a tour of Mary before moving on to the nearby ancient Merv, one of the most important cities of the Silk Road - parts of which date to the 6th Century BC - before returning to Mary for an overnight stay.

Day 6

This morning fly back to Ashgabat and then drive west to Nohur, a pleasant village high in the Kopet Dag Mountains near the Iranian border. Before reaching Nohur visit the National Mosque (the largest in Central Asia), the Mausoleum of the recently deceased President Niyazov and Bakharden Underground Lake. In Nohur, explore the village and spend the night in a family home.

Today continue sightseeing in and around Nohur, visiting numerous sights of natural beauty before returning to Ashgabat in the afternoon. On arrival in the capital enjoy the rest of the day free at leisure.
