I must admit it is true the Sacher Torte is the best chocolate cake I have ever tasted! I was sceptical but there is something so decadent about that dark sponge and apricot jam centre! Created by Franz Sacher in 1832 - it is only available in Vienna or Salzburg but is a true Viennese speciality.

About Austria

Austria is renowned for its stunning alpine landscapes, wooden chalets, winter sports activities and being the ubiquitous location for the filming of 'The Sound of Music'. Away from the Tyrolean countryside, Austria’s imperial capital, Vienna, enjoys a world-renowned reputation as much for its coffee houses and delicate pastries as for its musical and cultural events and particularly for its lavish balls, where nights are waltzed away to the melodies of its native Mozart and Strauss.

Regent Holidays offers city breaks in Vienna.

Where can you find Austria's best palaces?

Three of Austria’s best palaces can be found in its capital, Vienna: Schönbrunn Palace has 1,441 rooms and was the summer residence of the powerful Hapsburg family who ruled much of Europe and was modelled in Baroque style on the Palace of Versailles. Belvedere Palace, pictured above served as a summer home for Austria’s greatest military hero, Prince Eugene of Savoy and was designed by Johann Lukas von Hilderbrandt, the last major architect of the Baroque period in Austria. Hofburg Palace was the winter palace of the Hapsburgs and dates from 1279. Today, the sprawling palace houses everything from the offices of the President of Austria to the Spanish Riding School with its famous Lipizzaner stallions and even the Vienna Boys’ Choir!

Regent Recommends...

The Viennese take great pleasure in their coffeehouses, where people from all walks of life come to sit, read, chat, debate and play games. Join them in their favourite pastime and indulge in a bit of people watching. To gain some insight into the Viennese coffeehouse culture drop in at the Coffee Museum in the Austrian Social and Economic Museum in Vienna. You'll be greeted by the smell of freshly brewed coffee as you examine the fun collection of coffee grinders and machines.
