On my last trip to Montenegro we had a wonderful meal on the Bojana River; about 30 minutes drive past Ulcinj, near the border with Albania. On both banks of the river there are small wooden houses on stilts. Many of these wooden houses have been converted into restaurants – Rio and Ponte. Some of them are very sophisticated and elegant i.e. Misko, but they all have one thing in common, in that they serve the most delicious fresh fish.

Choose a holiday to Montenegro and discover one of the world's newest countries where you will find a ravishing coastline with sandy beaches backed by dramatic mountains, the foothills covered in olive trees, overlooking the turquoise Adriatic Sea.

Take in the walled coastal towns of Budva and Herceg Novi with narrow streets, tiny squares and attractive churches. Kotor, another walled town dominated by mountains which sweep down to the sea, sits at the head of southern Europe's deepest fjord.

Head into Durmitor National Park with its mountain lakes, deep gorges and densely forested peaks, Montenegro's premier ski resort in winter. Marvel at the cliff-face Ostrog monastery where pilgrims regularly make the arduous climb to pray there.

Long stretches of sandy beaches, particularly around Ulcinj, and tiny picturesque coves frame this mountainous country starting at Kotor fjord close to the Croatian border right down to the border with Albania.

Those fascinated by the history of the Balkans region will appreciate Montenegro’s well-preserved UNESCO World Heritage sites, charming old towns and unspoilt mountain landscapes. Kotor Bay offers the best of both worlds, boasting cultural landmarks as well as tranquil beaches and a relaxed coffee culture. For the adrenaline junkie in you, try white water rafting on the Tara Canyon – Europe’s deepest river canyon.

Regent Holidays can arrange group tours, individual tours and fly-drive holidays to Montenegro.
