Holidays in Croatia and Bosnia - the Balkans - Tour Itineraries

An 11 day combined tour featuring Split, Jajce, Sarejevo
, Mostar and Dubrovnik from £1181 per person

This individual tour offers a comprehensive experience of the gems that Dalmatia (Split and Dubrovnik) has to offer together with the charming sites of Bosnia-Herzegovina. A true journey of discovery, which will not fail to impress you.

Split warmly welcomes you, with its busy maritime life and sunny plazas, but as soon as you enter Bosnia, the landscape changes dramatically to a lush, green blanket of forests, rivers and lakes. In fact, the name ‘Bosnia’ comes from the word ‘bosana’, an Indo-European term meaning water. The different landscape of Herzegovina, with its karsic mountains, vineyards and gentle Mediterranean climate, will prepare you for your return to Croatia and its ‘pearl of Dalmatia’ – Dubrovnik.

Suggested Itinerary
Day 1FLY TO SPLIT
Fly to Split and transfer to your hotel for 2 nights.
Day 2SPLIT
Free day to explore the treasures of the Old Town within the Diocletian Palace and sit and relax by the harbour in the shade of palm trees.
Day 3SPLIT TO PRUSAC AND JAJCE
Our Bosnian guide will collect you from your hotel in Split and drive to Bosnia. Stop at Prusac en route, a Muslim holy site and the largest Muslim pilgrimage destination in Europe. Here, your guide will be the friendly local teacher, who will recount the history of the village, various mosques and its landmark fortress. Continue on to Jajce. Built in the 14th century, Jajce was once the capital of the independent Bosnian kingdom. Now it is home to an attractive citadel with a ruined fortress, the remains of a Roman temple dedicated to the god Mitra and a wonderful waterfall. Dinner and overnight stay in Jajce.
Day 4

JAJCE TO SARAJEVO VIA TRAVNIK
Morning drive to Travnik for sightseeing tour of the Old Town. Here, relax with a Turkish coffee and a copy of The Travnik Chronicles, the historical novel by Nobel Prize winner and Travnik native, Ivo Andric. After lunch in a local restaurant, drive to Sarajevo. For centuries, until the recent war, many different ethnic groups have lived here peacefully – Muslims, Croats, Serbs, Jews, Turks and many others. Foreigners are still made to feel very welcome in Sarajevo. Transfer to hotel for 3 nights. Afternoon at leisure, where you can visit the Sarajevo Museum for an historical overview of the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian empires, shop for silver and copper souvenirs in the workshops in Basv carsija, (the Turkish Quarter) and join the locals for some cevapi - the local speciality of lamb and beef sausages served with Turkish bread.

Day 5

SARAJEVO
Morning sightseeing tour of Sarajevo, a city that has one of the most oriental influences in Europe. Afternoon free to explore at leisure.

Day 6

EXCURSIONS
Today we provide a selection of three different excursions you can take (please choose at time of booking).
Option 1 Tour of Sarajevo Environs
In the morning drive to the surrounding hills and villages for a panoramic view of the city. We include a traditional lunch at Biban Restaurant set amongst the hills above the city. Also included are some war-related sites, such as the Tunnel Museum. This private museum shows part of the tunnel built underneath the airport in order to get provisions to besieged Sarajevo, and provided a lifeline for many inhabitants.

Option 2 Srebrenica
A guided day tour of Srebrenica, which was witness to the largest mass murder in Europe since World War II.

Option 3 Lukomir Village
An excursion to Lukomir, a remote authentic Bosnian village, which can only be reached by a 21/2 hour drive
from Sarajevo. Here, you will be welcomed at one of the family’s houses for a typical home-made lunch – a
unique experience, allowing a deeper understanding and appreciation of another part of Bosnian culture.

Day 7SARAJEVO TO MOSTAR
Drive into Herzegovina via Tunnel Ivan. Here, the weather becomes milder and warmer, and the landscape changes to Mediterranean. Mostar is one of the highlights of a visit to Bosnia with its iconic bridge and divided city. To the west live the Croats and Muslims live in the east, where you will find the Old Town with its cobbled streets, coffee houses and restaurants. Why not try the pitte – delicious local pies (burek is with minced beef meat, zeljanica is with spinach, sirnica is with cheese and krompirusa is with diced potatoes). These are all very delicious and perfect washed down with a glass of Blatina barrique. Check-in hotel for 2 nights.

Day 8

MOSTAR TO BLAGAJ
In the morning depart for Blagaj and a tour of the Tekke, the Dervish Monastery, set dramatically by the River Buna. After a delicious lunch by the river return to Mostar. Rest of day at leisure.

Day 9MOSTAR TO DUBROVNIK VIA POCITELJ
Drive south and stop in Pocitelj, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This, picturesque, small, Old Town is an
excellent place to wander round and stop for some typical doughnuts with cheese at Muta Restaurant. Transfer to your hotel in Dubrovnik for 3 nights.l
