Regent was the first
and is the only tour operator offering trips to
Moldova. We started in 2000 after a successful visit
- so come visit Moldova, the tiny former Soviet
Republic of Moldova and the last forgotten corner
of Europe. Its capital Chisinau is often referred
to as Small Rome as it too lies over seven hills.
However, the similarity really ends here. Tree-lined
streets and numerous parks makes Chisinau feel more
like a provincial capital than the Eternal City.
One of the highlights of any trip to Moldova is
an afternoon spent wine tasting in the underground
wine town of Cricova. The huge cavernous roads named
after grape varieties stretch for more than 60 kilometres
under the limestone hills.
You can also experience
the Soviet Union with a visit to the self-proclaimed
independent Trans-Dniester Republic. Here, Lenin
still stands proudly outside official buildings
in its capital, Tiraspol. The Transdniestrian Moldovan
Republic, to use its full title, has its own border
controls, its own currency (the Transdniestrian
rouble) its own state languages, a president and
a parliament, a judicial system, an army, a police
force, a security service, a constitution, a coat
of arms, a national flag and a national anthem.
