It is impossible to do
justice to Russia in a few lines because of its sheer
diversity. Vast stretches of frozen tundra dominate
the north and merge into enormous swathes of birch
forests and treeless steppes stretching into the distance.
Siberia is often dismissed as an icy
wasteland but is a paradise for nature lovers, especially
around Lake Baikal, the world's deepest lake. Kamchatka,
an island off the northeast coastline of Siberia, has
a dramatic moonscape of volcanoes and hot springs.
Culture vultures will love the ancient
Golden Ring towns of Suzdal, Vladimir and Zagorsk with
their picturesque forts, monasteries and churches. The
jewels in the crown have to be Moscow and St Petersburg,
the former energetic and go-getting and the latter sophisticated
and cultured.
