Combine Russia’s two greatest cities in one holiday. Explore the grand historical sights and Soviet skyscrapers of Moscow, before heading to the palaces, museums and cultivated culture of St Petersburg. Both truly Russian, yet both distinctly individual in character; for first time visitors, this is a fast introduction to this complex country.
In Moscow, our experienced local guide will help you understand Russia’s recent past and present with a tour inside its political heart. Join soldiers on Red Square, where the Soviet Union’s grandest ceremonies once took place, before stepping inside the Kremlin itself to walk the corridors that have been the heart of Russian power for centuries. Off the beaten track, our guide can help you explore Moscow’s more interesting neighbourhoods, or find the right place to have a traditional Russian tea room encounter.
But Moscow isn’t the whole Russian story. In St Petersburg, you’ll roam the lavish rooms of the last Tsar’s Winter Palace, and see the greatest jewels of the Russian Empire at the Hermitage and Faberge museums. This is still the country’s cultural capital, and whether you want the best in ballet or opera, or cutting edge Russian cinema from today there is no better city.
Arrive Moscow and transfer to your hotel of choice to check in for three nights.
After breakfast, your private local tour guide will meet you in the hotel reception. Enjoy a morning city tour of Moscow, using the famous metro with elegant and extravagant underground stations. Visit the vast Red Square, where you'll see St Basil's Cathedral and the Kremlin (from the outside only). Wander through the Alexandrovsky Garden and GUM (the former State Department Store), and spot the Bolshoi Theatre.
Speak to a Regent Specialist about booking tickets for an evening opera at the Bolshoi. (B)
Today enjoy a free day in Moscow to explore at your leisure. Optional excursions are available. For example, you may decide to add a visit to Star City - the Russian Cosmonaut Training Centre. Alternatively, ask a Regent Russia Specialist about half-day tours visiting the museums within the Kremlin’s Armoury. (B)
Spend a free morning at leisure before taking a transfer to the railway station and climbing aboard the fast day-train to St Petersburg. On arrival, transfer to the hotel and check in for four nights. (B)
Meet your private local guide for a morning city tour of St Petersburg. Stop for photos across the water to Peter and Paul Fortress, spot the impressive Russian battleship, Aurora, and visit the vast, sky blue Winter Palace used as a filming location for the BBC's War and Peace adaptation. (B)
Explore St Petersburg at leisure. Perhaps head to the city’s famous Imperial Estate, Peterhof. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this stunning complex of palaces, gardens and fountain cascades is one of St Petersburg’s most popular attractions. Spend time exploring the elaborate interior of the Grand Palace where the highlights include the white and turquoise Throne Room and the richly gilded Ballroom. Be sure to discover the famous Grand Cascade, an ensemble of 64 fountains and other decorations including bronze statues and bas-reliefs, which runs from the northern façade of the palace to Marine Canal. (B)
Why not visit the State Hermitage Museum. Celebrating its 250th anniversary in 2014, this incredible museum houses over three million fascinating artefacts. Ask a Regent Russia Specialist for more details or to book optional excursions in advance. (B)

I would like to thank you very much for a lovely well organised holiday, especially to our guides Sergei and Svetlana. Our only comment was the arrival into St Petersburg was early and our room was not available until later. Otherwise we had a great time and would recommend the trip to other would be travellers.
We stayed in the National in Moscow and the Angleterre in St Petersburg - both good, the National was particularly friendly! We felt we were exceptionally well cared for in Russia. The local guides were particularly punctual and reliable.
Many thanks for interesting, caring holiday. The Hotel Cosmos in Moscow was basic but OK and the restaurants at both hotels needed prompting about gluten free meals but did provide lovely meals immediately.

The tour guides were excellent - also the travelling and tour arrangements. We added a couple of visits plus 2 shows. The Sovietsky was OK - just a little far out and the Angleterre was excellent.
We would thoroughly recommend Regent Holidays as this was our first visit to Russia - everything was very well organised and the tour guides very informative and helpful. The Grand Express was a wonderful experience and an enjoyable way to get from Moscow to St Petersburg. The National Hotel in Moscow and the Astoria in St Petersburg was excellent.

The independent guided tour was excellent and worth paying the money for – highly recommended! Every meeting was on time and the guides very pleasant and helpful. We were met at the station and escorted to the train which was good as the station was very crowded and confusing.
The organisation of everything worked perfectly and made out holiday extremely enjoyable.

I was very impressed by the very high level of service and excellent advice on Russia by Andrei Kashkin. When we book our next holiday it will be through Regent Holidays.

The tour of the Kremlin and the Diamond Fund was excellent – the guide most informative and my wife loved the jewels. All of our guides were super, and this was one of the best holidays we have had – absolutely fascinating!!
