North Iceland Aurora

3 Day Tour, from £615 per person
The perfect extension to any Reykjavík city break, discover a unique landscape of volcanic craters and steaming fumaroles on this short adventure in North Iceland. Travel through mountain passes and across lava fields to gain an insight into the region’s fiery geology, and in the evening, join a northern lights tour to search for the celestial phenomenon dancing across the night sky.

Tour Itinerary

Take a 45 minute flight to Akureyri from Reykjavík domestic airport and transfer to the hotel for two nights. Spend the afternoon exploring the capital of North Iceland at leisure, perhaps visiting the famous church which looks out over the Old Town. After dinner join a northern lights tour and travel into the countryside, away from the bright lights of the city, to search for the magical aurora borealis painting ribbons of colour across the night sky.
Enjoy a full day coach tour to some of North Iceland’s most incredible geological wonders. Stop at Godafoss waterfall, famed for its dramatic beauty as well as its historic part in Iceland’s conversion to Christianity. Travel through Reykjadalur valley to Dimmuborgir, a lava labyrinth of magnificent basaltic pillars and lava sculptures. Continue through the lava field to Krafla caldera and the explosion crater of Viti. Formed in 1734 by a five-year eruption, the giant crater is 300 metres wide. Explore the solfatara field of Námaskard and enjoy a short walk around the fumaroles and mud pits. Continue to Myvatn Nature Baths for an optional soak in the silky-smooth geothermal water before returning to Akureyri. If you did not see the northern lights on the previous evening, another opportunity to search for the aurora is offered. (B)
Transfer to Akureyri airport for the return flight to Reykjavík. Consider booking a late afternoon or evening flight to allow free time to take part in optional activities. Perhaps try husky sledging or ice-fishing, or take an excursion to The Christmas House for a festive end to the holiday. Ask a Regent Iceland Specialist to pre-book optional excursions. (B)
