6 Day Tour, from £1755 per person

Discover the natural wonders of south and west Iceland on this deluxe winter mini break. Staying in luxury countryside hotels, explore the otherworldly landscape of dramatic volcanoes, thundering waterfalls and creaking glaciers at your own pace. As night falls, lie back in the warm waters of a geothermal hot tub and keep watch over the winter skies for the flickering ribbons of the northern lights.

Tour Itinerary

Fly to Keflavik airport and collect the hire car. Perhaps drive to the Blue Lagoon* (25km) - filled with nine million litres of geothermal seawater, it is the silica and minerals that provide the lagoon’s renowned healing properties. Drive to Hotel Grimsborgir at the heart of the Golden Circle for a two night stay in a Superior Room. After dark, retire to the outdoor hot tubs and watch the winter night sky for the magical aurora. (105km)
*Blue lagoon entrance not included.
Hotel Grimsborgir
Spend the day exploring the natural highlights of South Iceland, all within easy driving distance of the hotel. Just 15 kilometres to the south is Selfoss, a beautiful horseshoe waterfall on a powerful glacier river. To the north, the highlights of the Golden Circle await; visit the Geysir geothermal fields where lively Strokkur spouts water 100 feet into the air, and feel the power of Gullfoss waterfall where icy waters plummet into a deep canyon. After dark, search for the ethereal aurora away from any light pollution in this peaceful rural setting. (B)
Hotel Grimsborgir
Head west and spend the day exploring, stopping at Thingvellir National Park to discover the continental drift between the North American and Eurasian plates. Or depart early to make the two-hour journey in time to catch the 12.30pm Into The Glacier tour (optional). This awesome excursion by specially modified ice truck allows travellers the opportunity to walk through man-made ice tunnels and caves in Europe’s second largest glacier. Check in to Hotel Husafell for a two night stay in a Standard Room. (B) (135km)
Husafell is an area rich in natural beauty. Choose to explore its nearby lava fields and glaciers or opt for a full day trip to Snaefellsnes, a 90 kilometre-long peninsula crowned by Snaefellsjokull ice cap. Discover the dramatic volcanic peaks, traditional fishing villages, towering cliffs and beautiful fjords at your own pace, before returning to Husafell for a dip in the hotel’s geothermal swimming pool. Make use of a final night in the countryside to hunt for the mystical northern lights. (B)
Depart Husafell, driving along the rugged west coast to Iceland’s vibrant capital. Enjoy free time in the city to explore the shops, galleries and museums, or perhaps head out on a winter whale watching safari in search of humpbacks and orcas. Check in to an Executive Room at the Hilton Reykjavik Nordica. (B) (130km)
Hilton Reykjavik Nordica
Drive back to Keflavik airport for the return flight to the UK. (B) (50km)

The Best Western Reykjavik hotel staff were helpful and friendly and the hotel is in a good location. The tour of the Golden Circle was excellent, the driver went out of his way to make it more enjoyable. The Hunt for the Northern Lights excursion was excellent, fun and a real adventure. Questions were answered promptly by Jamie and I found him very helpful when I called to discuss the holiday originally.

We found the Family Tour itinerary very informative and it took us to places we might otherwise not have known about.

The Narfeyrarstofa Restaurant in Skykkishólmur is excellent as is the exhibition and restaurant at the Settlement Centre in Borgarnes. The Laundromat Café/Bar and Iceland Fish and Chips in Reykjavik were also very good – take advantage of ‘happy hours’ to get good value for money, and the National Museum was very family-friendly.

We loved Iceland – and will be back! Thanks for your help.
