About Macedonia

The old and the new rub shoulders in Macedonia's capital, Skopje, where black-clad Orthodox priests mingle with trendy teenagers clutching state-of-the art gadgets. The Ottoman influence is apparent with the Old Bazaar and the slim minarets of the mosques.

Away from Skopje you will encounter a land of gleaming lakes and rivers, brooding mountains, remote stone villages and stunning monasteries. Sleepy Ohrid comes alive in the summer as it draws in visitors to its idyllic location on Lake Ohrid with its backdrop of dark blue mountains. Make sure you take in one of the many summer concerts held in the atmospheric venue of the remains of the old fortress.

Get some fresh air by hiking through the forested wilderness of Macedonia's national parks or soak up the alpine views from the premier ski resort of Popova Sapka. Head for the town of Bitola peppered with mosques, Catholic and Orthodox churches and a beautifully preserved Turkish bazaar. Here you can take in Roman Heraclea with its baths and mosaics and the remote hilltop Treskavec monastery.
