No visit to Burma is complete without a visit to Bagan (formerly Pagan). Set in a rural farming environment, this site is made up of over 2,000 pagodas and temples which represent the diversity of ancient Myanmar architectural styles between the 11th and 13th centuries. The local community still farm the land around the temples so you can see many instances of bullock carts ploughing fields against the backdrop of a magnificent temple.
A highlight of any visit is a sunrise balloon ride over the temple complex - this will give you a real sense of the size and beauty of the region. Or take a bicycle and head off to explore the less accessible temples from your saddle, both are a welcome change of pace and perspective.
