Indonesia embodies the word ‘enchanting’ as well as any other country on Earth. Thousands of islands scattered across the Indian and Pacific Oceans make up a dazzling portfolio of beautiful natural landscapes, meaning visitors to this part of the world are afforded a vast collection of memory-making travel experiences. Watch the sun rise over the picture-perfect cone of Mt Bromo before visiting the smoking volcanoes of Java’s immense plateaus; take in the weird and wonderful wildlife in Kalimantan’s orangutan-housing lush jungles; join visitors making a pilgrimage to the immense ancient temples of Borobudur; venture to paradise beaches and dive spectacular coral reefs.

Indonesia holidays are about cultural immersion, too. Visitors can explore the handicrafts and local cultures of lesser-explored northern reaches of Bali, wander through terraced rice paddy fields and sit down with local coffee-growers to sample the region’s award-winning blends at the plantations themselves.

Even the cities hustle and bustle at the heart of South East Asian life. Visitors with a keen interest in history should make haste for Yogyakarta, which boasts the stunning temples of Prembanan and Borobodur – the largest Buddhist temple in the world, – and the vibrant Kraton complex, which features a fine example of traditional Javanese sultanate architecture.

Indonesia is a nature-lovers paradise but, with so many islands and incredible wildlife experiences to choose from, we recommend planning at least ten days - if not two weeks - here in order to island-hop and explore without rushing. Perhaps begin with explorations through the jungles of Sumatra in search of orangutans and baboons before journeying across Java, stopping at ancient temples and smouldering volcanoes, and finish by spending a few days relaxing on the beaches or scuba diving the offshore coral reefs of Bali and the Gili Islands.

Stef's Tips
1
For a unique wildlife experience, discover Komodo dragons, the world's largest lizard, in Komodo National Park.
2
In Gunung Leuser National Park, Sumatra, wild elephants and rinoceros still inhabit the jungles.
3
Head off the beatent track and explore the Gili Islands, world-renowned for their diving opportunities.
