Experience the life of the Lao people with an immersive visit to an organic farm. Connect with the land and its people while working in the rice paddies and vegetable gardens, learning traditional farming techniques and the ongoing efforts to promote organic farming throughout Laos.
Set off this morning for the countryside and prepare for an unforgettable day as an organic farmer in Laos. Your destination is a local organic farm, a charming stilted wooden farmhouse surrounded by miles of emerald green rice paddies. The farm was established by the local community in response to the destructive slash-and-burn agricultural techniques. Together, they developed an organic farm that not only sustains the community but also educates other farmers on sustainable growing methods. Take a guided walk through the organic vegetable garden with a knowledgeable local farmer. Witness various activities on the farm such as basket weaving, noodle making, and sugarcane juicing.
Then, get ready to dive into farm life by joining the farmers in the fields. There are 13 stages of rice production, and depending on the time of year, you'll help with ploughing, planting, harvesting, or threshing the rice using traditional techniques. This hands-on experience provides a deeper appreciation for Lao farmers. After working up an appetite, enjoy a selection of rice-based snacks before returning to Luang Prabang at midday.
