Arts and Handicapables

In a 4.2-hectare sprawling complex with buildings that only have ramps and hardly any staircase or steps, one cannot help but admire the tenacity and self-reliance of many of its workers who are physically challenged as they go about their daily work routine. ‘Tahanan Walang Hagdan’ translated as ‘house with no steps’, was created as a haven for wheelchair users where they were taught socio-economic skills that will help improve their lives and sustain them throughout their lives.

A visit to this compound takes you to work rooms which were built for various purposes – the making of wooden toys, and educational tool kits; a sewing room for eco bags and other household items; a work station for made-to-order wheelchairs; a work room for packaging services – all of which are run by wheelchair-bound workers. The complex also contains school rooms for disabled youths, a daycare centre for the workers’ kids, a physical therapy clinic, and a gymnasium. End the visit by dropping by its souvenir shop where products created by the workers are on display, then proceed to Pinto Art Museum, a contemporary art museum tucked away in the rolling hills of Antipolo.

Located in a 1.2-hectare well-landscaped setting, Pinto Art Museum showcases paintings with social, cultural and political undertones, sculptures and art installation pieces. Meander through its four galleries and immerse yourself in the serene atmosphere of its garden before returning to the hotel.
