Borneo Mount Kinabalu Climb Holiday

The holiday offers a great insight into the wildlife regions of Sabah which includes cruises along the Kinabatangan River to see the proboscis monkeys, macaques, crocodiles and a huge array of the birdlife before watching the highlight of this particular wildlife show, the orangutan, at Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre.

Next comes the hard work! Head to the World Heritage Site of Kinabalu Park, home to imposing Mount Kinabalu, the highest mountain in Borneo’s Crocker Range. Trek through the rich flora and fauna of the park before spending a brief night on the mountain. Rise early and complete the ascent to be rewarded with a stunning panoramic sunrise view and a real sense of achievement.

Return to the airport and fly across to Sandakan. Transfer by boat along the Kinabatangan River delta - search for proboscis monkeys, birds and reptiles along the way. Check into the Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge and enjoy lunch. Late afternoon embark on a further river cruise in search of wildlife. (B,L,D)

Enjoy an early morning boat trip to Ox Bow Lake in search of wildlife and trek the riverine forest along the lake before returning to the lodge for breakfast. In the afternoon those who wish can visit Gomantong Caves, the largest birds nest cave in Sabah, famous for the swiftlets and their edible nests (payable locally, please speak to the guide). Later cruise the Menanggul Kinabatangan Rivers before returning to the lodge at dusk. (B,L,D)

SEPILOK REHABILITATION CENTRE
SEPILOK REHABILITATION CENTRE

Drive to Sepilok and check in to MY Nature Resort. Drive to Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre where captive orangutans are cared for before being reintroduced into the wild. Observe the orangutans at their feeding stations in the rainforest and at the nursery (if open). Continue to visit the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre which rescues captured sun bears and is involved in their conservation, welfare, rehabilitation and education. Enjoy lunch near Sepilok. (B,L,D)

Drive overland from Sepilok to Kinabalu Park, a journey of around five hours. Stop at Poring Hot Springs en route and experience the treetop canopy walkway. Drive into the park and enjoy the afternoon at leisure to explore the mountain garden. Overnight in the park accommodation. (B,L,D)
DAY 8
MOUNT KINABALU CLIMB
MOUNT KINABALU CLIMB
Following breakfast, commence the climb of Mount Kinabalu ascending through a variety of terrain. The climb takes approximately four to five hours. Check in to the Laban Rata Resthouse for an overnight stay. Spend the afternoon relaxing before dinner. (B,L,D)

MOUNT KINABALU TO GAYA ISLAND

Begin the three hour climb by torchlight to the summit of Mount Kinabalu at around 2am, arriving in time to enjoy an incredible sunrise. Descend and transfer to the park's restaurant for lunch. Collect your climbing certificate and drive to Kota Kinabalu to take the resort speedboat across to Gayana Marine Resort to spend the afternoon at leisure. (B,L)
