Montenegro is a fantastic destination for a family holiday. Being roughly the size of Wales it is easy to explore this compact country on a weeks holiday and incorporate many exciting activities.
This family adventure itinerary takes in both the national parks of Biograska Gora and Durmitor in the north of the country where you will experience a mixture of 4 wheeled and on foot adventures. Make your way down to the coast, via the awe inspiring Ostrog Monastery, to the Lustica peninsula, a slightly remote area of the coast away from the tourist resorts which still retains the air of authentic Montenegro. Here, embark on jeep rides to hilltop fortresses and speed boat experiences on the Boka Bay.
This is a self-guided holiday using a rental car. Activities can be altered to suit your family, please speak to a Regent Balkans specialist to tailor your perfect itinerary.
Arrive in Tivat, on the Montenegrin coast. Collect the hire car and make your way north to Kolasin. Take your time as you drive the mountain road which runs alongside the Moraca Canyon, an incredibly scenic stretch of road. Here, you will find the Moraca Monastery located along the banks of the river and surrounded by a garden of hydrangeas and roses. Reach Kolasin and check-in to the hotel. If time permits, visit nearby Biogradksa Gora National Park, home to one of Europe’s last three remaining primeval forests, boasting trees over 500 years old and a huge variety of flora and fauna.
Today you will explore the Bjelasica Mountain Massif by jeep safari. You will be collected from your hotel by jeep and taken to the Bjelasica area which surrounds Biogradska Gora National Park, one of the last remaining primeval forests in Europe. Travel through mountain villages, stopping for lunch at a local village restaurant (Eko Katun Vranjak). Drive past vast forests, rippling rivers, glacial fed lakes and meadows covered with wild flowers. Return to your accommodation at the end of the tour. For those looking for a more active tour, this can be taken as a hiking excursion instead of by jeep. (B,L)
Make your way towards Zabljak (approx 90km) via the Tara River Canyon and the impressive Djurdjevica Bridge. The canyon is the deepest in Europe at 4,265 foot. From the bridge, watch rafters float by below, whilst daredevils wizz past on the canyon spanning zip wire or opt to join them (these activities can be added on at an extra cost). Check-in to your accommodation in Zabljak. (B)
This morning take an easy guided hiking tour through Durmitor NP which includes a visit to three lakes – Barno, Zminje and Black lake. You will hear the famous legends of the lakes, a bit about the vegetation and experience some amazing views on this 3.5 hour tour. In the afternoon, embark on a fun 2 hour buggy driving adventure in Durmitor National Park. The 2 hour tour includes visits to Zminjicko, Vrazje and Riblje lakes. You will drive the buggy car by yourself, following the guide who will be placed in the first buggy in the convoy, so having a drivers licence is a must. Two persons can fit into one buggy so children can ride alongside parents.
Start to make your way towards the coast today. We recommend to take the Durmitor Ring panoramic road (follow brown signposted roads) out of Zabljak. This scenic mountain road passes remote settlements and many a jaw-dropping viewpoint. Turn off towards Ostrog Monastery, the most important Orthodox Christian site in Montenegro. The monastery clings to a cliff face 900m above the Zeta Valley and is worth the trip alone to marvel at how it even came to exist. There is a car park 200m from the entrance, so the climb up is not too arduous. Afterwards, continue down to the coast and on to the Lustica Peninsula, a lesser developed part of the coast near Kotor and the Boka Bay.
You will be collected from your hotel today and transferred to Kotor, where you will transfer to a comfortable 4x4 vehicle, driven by a guide, and even equipped with coffee machine! Head up to Vrmac Fortres, an abandoned Austro-Hungarian fortification. Along the way, stop to admire the spectacular views across Kotor and Boka Bay. Explore the fortress before taking an off road adventure to a panoramic view point and on to the village of Gornji Stoliv for a short hike and picnic lunch. This exciting day trip offers a unique view of the Kotor area from areas that are usually off limits to most tourists. Return to your accommodation this afternoon, or opt to spend free time in Kotor. (B)
Meet your guide at the main city gate in Kotor and embark on an exhilarating 3 hour speedboat tour of the stunning Boka Bay, visiting the Blue Cave (swimming time) and Our Lady of the Rocks island (time to visit church/look around island). Also included is an intriguing 5-minute visit to an ex-submarine military base, adding a unique historical touch to your journey. This expedition promises a blend of natural beauty, cultural exploration, and a touch of history for an unforgettable experience. Afterwards, spend the rest of your day explroing the old town of Kotor or embark on a sunset SUP experience- a perfect way to round off your Montenegro adventure. (B)
Return your rental car at Tivat Airport and take return flight to the UK. (B)
