Xieng Khouang Province, northeast of Vientiane Capital, is located atop the Tran-ninh plateau and has Phonsavanh as its new capital. The location has historical significance as a crossroads for commerce between Vietnam and Thailand. The province has a mixed ethnic population and is most known for the Plain of Jars, a site of ancient stone megaliths. Despite intense bombardment during the Second Indochina War, Xieng Khouang has since seen peace. The Xieng Khouang Provincial Museum allows visitors to examine the remains of Muong Khoun's Buddhist temples while also learning about the region's history.
