Perfect for travellers who want to experience a more local side of Transylvania, this five-day private journey combines the region’s medieval towns and castles with food, wildlife and encounters with local communities. Travelling with an English-speaking guide, you’ll pack plenty into a short break while getting beyond the traditional sightseeing route.

Explore historic Brașov and legendary Bran Castle, meet rescued brown bears at the Libearty Bear Sanctuary and discover the Saxon heritage of Biertan and Sighișoara. The real flavour of Transylvania comes through its people and traditions: join a hands-on cookery experience, taste traditional Romanian brandy, discover village life in Viscri and sample locally produced cheeses at a family farm.

DAY 1
FLY TO BRASOV
Medieval Council House in Main Square of Brasov

Arrive in Brașov and enjoy a city tour with a local guide. Founded by Teutonic Knights in 1211, the city developed into an important medieval trading centre, protected by formidable fortifications. Explore the historic centre, including Piața Sfatului and the impressive Black Church, and discover more about Brașov's Saxon heritage and fascinating past, including the period when the city was renamed Stalin City. Check in to your hotel for an overnight stay.

DAY 2
BRASOV TO SIBIU
Libearty Bear Sanctuary in Zarnesti

This morning, visit the Libearty Bear Sanctuary in Zărnești, hearing the stories of rescued bears now living in a protected forest environment. Continue to legendary Bran Castle, dramatically positioned on a rocky outcrop and renowned for its associations with the Dracula story, although its real history is equally fascinating. After lunch, enjoy a tasting of pălincă, Romania's traditional fruit brandy, before continuing to Sibiu for an overnight stay. (B,L)

DAY 3
SIBIU TO SIGHISOARA
Biertan's fortified church

Visit the Roma community of Brateiu and learn more about local traditions and everyday life. Continue to Mărginimea Sibiului for a hands-on cooking experience with a local expert, discovering Romania's culinary traditions before enjoying the dishes you've prepared. Later, visit Biertan's impressive UNESCO-listed fortified church, once an important centre of Transylvanian Saxon life. Continue to the beautifully preserved medieval town of Sighișoara for an overnight stay. (B,L)

DAY 4
SIGHISOARA TO BRASOV
village of Viscr

Travel to Viscri, where community projects are helping preserve traditional crafts and village life. Discover local skills including embroidery and blacksmithing, sample regional produce and wander through the village to its UNESCO-listed fortified church. Continue to Ferma Cățean in Rotbav, a family-run farm specialising in traditional Romanian cheeses, and enjoy a tasting of its locally produced varieties. Afterwards, return to Brașov for your final overnight stay. (B)

DAY 5
FLY TO THE UK
Black Church and Piata Sfatului square, Brasov

Transfer to the airport for your flight back to the UK. (B)
