With new direct flights from the UK to Akureyri, North Iceland - it has never been easier to explore the wonders of North Iceland. On this short summer break we have included a few sightseeing experiences such as a whale watching excursion and a tour of Akureyri and its surrounding countryside. A holiday to North Iceland would not be complete without a visit to its newest spa - Forest Lagoon. This sustainable geothermal spa nestles into a forest and has amazing views of the fjord and mountain ranges from its infinity-edge pools.
Why not extend your holiday to take in some of North Iceland's famous sights on the Diamond Circle.
Fly on the new direct flight from Stansted to Akureyri, the capital of North Iceland. On arrival, transfer to your hotel and check in for three nights. Enjoy a late afternoon walk exploring Akureyri - hopefully under the beautiful light of the midnight sun. If you are a fan of ice cream, then pop in to Brynja ice cream parlour - something of an Akureyri institution - expect queues in summer as well as on icy winter days.
Today, join one of the whale watching tours out of Akureyri. Take a stroll down to the harbour for the chance to see the incredible Eyjafjord Humpbacks in their natural habitat. The warmth of the summer sun brings vibrant life and plenty of food to the fjord and following it, in a feeding frenzy, come the larger-than-life humpbacks. On board, there are specially trained whale watching guides who are experts at spotting them and who can teach you all about their behaviour. The ship can take up to 200 people and offers spectacular views from “cinema styled” viewing platforms. With ample indoor and outdoor seating, a bar and cafeteria, see the whales in comfort. (B)
Today, take a glimpse into Akureyri and the surrounding countryside on this excursion. Drive up to the hills above the town from where, on a clear day, there are marvellous views over Akureyri as well as the surrounding mountains, the fjord and the open sea. In addition to enjoying the beautiful nature of one of Eyjafjörður’s valleys, visit a typical Icelandic country home/farm and have light refreshments with the possibility of a close look at some of Iceland’s domestic animals.
In the afternoon, experience North Iceland's newest geothermal spa - Forest Lagoon, located a few minutes drive from Akureyri in Vaðlaskógur forest. On site there are two infinity pools with swim-up bars, a sauna and cafe-bistro on site. Enjoy the relaxing geothermal waters surround by beautiful spruce trees. (B)
This morning, transfer to the airport for the flight back to the UK. (B)
