Fly to Ivalo where the dark night skies are painted bright with the ethereal lights of the aurora borealis almost every clear evening during the winter months, and where the snow-drenched landscapes offer the perfect setting for adventure. Stay in a glass roofed cabin where the northern lights can be spotted whilst tucked up under the covers.
Fly to Ivalo, in the northern reaches of Finnish Lapland, transfer to the Northern Lights Village and check in to your double room cabin for four nights. The 25 Aurora Wood Cabins have heated windows above the beds, which hopefully will offer you a glorious display of the northern lights. Just in case you sleep through sign up for an Aurora alert from the reception (small charge payable locally) and be notified when the green lights start to dance across the sky. The excursion order will be confirmed locally and there are plenty of other excursions to pre-book as well. The adventures begin this evening with an Aurora Camp excursion by bus. Stop by Lake Inari for some night-time photographs of the frozen waters before warming up by a fire with Lappish midnight snacks and a warming drink. Grab a reindeer rug and lie down in the snow and watch the northern lights dance above your head. (D)
After breakfast, try your hand at mushing your own sled of huskies. Sledges are shared between two people, so you will be able to alternate between driving the dogs and sitting back to enjoy the ride in the sledge. The route takes around 30 minutes through the snowy forests of the region. Enjoy the rest of the day to relax at leisure before dinner in the cosy restaurant. Speak to a Regent Specialist about booking an excursion. (B, D)
Today, embark on a short snowmobile journey away from the bustle of the village of Saariselkä and travel along snowy fells and fir trees laden with snow. Return to the northern lights village and relax before dinner. (B, D)
Enjoy breakfast and spend the day at leisure, talk to a Regent Specialist for more information.
