This morning meet your guide for a 4-hour walking tour of Macedonia's charming capital city. Admire the fountain of Alexander the Great set in the grand Macedonia Square. See the clock on the facade of the Old Railway Station in Skopje, which still bears witness to the devastating earthquake that struck on July 26th, 1963, freezing at the exact moment of 05:17. Explore its historic Čaršija area. Here, discover sights dating back to the Ottoman and Byzantine eras, such as the 15th-century Kameni Most (Stone Bridge) and the Tvrdina Kale Fortress, which has been guarding Skopje since the 5th century. In your free time be sure to explore the lively dining and drinking spots in Debar Maalo, a picturesque neighbourhood lined with trees. (B)
Today with your local guide drive to Mount Vodno and take the cable car* up to the Millennium Cross for panoramic views over Skopje (clear weather depending). Built to celebrate 2,000 years of Christianity and situated on the highest point on Mount Vodno overlooking the city, the 66m Millennium Cross shines brightly at night. Next continue to St. Pantelejmon Monastery, which boasts a modest exterior concealing a profound artistic treasure. Constructed in 1164, its unassuming Byzantine church hosts a collection of original frescoes that revolutionised Western art. The final stop of the day is at the enchanting Matka Canyon showcasing the natural beauty of Macedonia's mountains. Here perhaps enjoy a meal at the restaurant or enjoy a boat tour to Cave Vrelo. (B)
