Fly to Krakow and take a private transfer to your hotel in the historic Kazimierz district for a five-night stay. Depending on your arrival time, spend the evening exploring the surrounding streets, where historic synagogues sit alongside independent shops, cafes, bars and restaurants, or take a stroll towards the Old Town and Main Market Square.
Enjoy a free morning before joining a local guide for an afternoon walking food tour. Discover Krakow's food scene while sampling a selection of traditional and contemporary Polish dishes at several venues around the city. Travel from Krakow on a guided day excursion combining two of southern Poland's most important sites. Visit the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum to learn about the history of the former Nazi German concentration and extermination camp and those who were imprisoned and murdered there. Continue to the UNESCO-listed Wieliczka Salt Mine, worked since the 13th century, to explore its underground passages, chambers and remarkable salt-carved chapels. Return to Krakow after the tour. Spend a free day exploring Krakow at your own pace. Visit Wawel Castle and Cathedral before heading to the Main Market Square to see St Mary's Basilica and the Renaissance Cloth Hall. Explore the historic Kazimierz district, with its synagogues, museums, cafes and independent shops, or head further afield to Nowa Huta to discover its distinctive socialist-era architecture. Alternatively, enjoy a stroll through Planty Park, which forms a green belt around the Old Town. (B)
Travel south from Krakow to Zakopane, set beneath the peaks of the Tatra Mountains. En route, stop at a traditional bacowka to learn how oscypek, the region's distinctive smoked sheep's cheese, is produced and sample some of the different varieties. In Zakopane, enjoy time around lively Krupowki Street, with its shops, restaurants and local highland produce. Take the funicular up Gubalowka for panoramic views across Zakopane and towards the Tatra Mountains before returning to Krakow. (B)
