Perfect for wildlife enthusiasts and conservation-minded travellers, this five-day private journey combines some of Transylvania’s most rewarding wildlife experiences with the historic city of Brașov and legendary Bran Castle. Based in Brașov throughout, travel with experienced local guides into the surrounding Carpathian landscapes in search of some of Romania’s most impressive wildlife.
Visit the Libearty Bear Sanctuary to learn about its work caring for rescued brown bears before experiencing a very different encounter, watching for wild bears from a specialist forest hide. Head into the Făgăraș Mountains to track reintroduced European bison with an expert guide, looking for tracks and other signs of wildlife along the way. There’s also time to explore Brașov, visit Bran Castle and enjoy the landscapes of rural Transylvania.
Tour Itinerary
Fly to Brașov, where you will be met on arrival and transferred to your centrally located hotel for a four-night stay. Depending on your arrival time, spend the remainder of the day relaxing or take a first wander through Brașov’s historic Old Town, where colourful buildings, pedestrian streets and lively Piața Sfatului sit beneath the forested slopes of Tâmpa Mountain.
Travel to Zărnești to visit the Libearty Bear Sanctuary, which provides a safe home for brown bears rescued from captivity and poor conditions. Continue to medieval Bran Castle, dramatically positioned on a rocky outcrop and later associated with the Dracula legend. Enjoy a traditional Romanian lunch before returning to Brașov for a guided walk through the historic centre, including Piața Sfatului and the imposing Gothic Black Church. (B,L)
Head into the Făgăraș Mountains for a full-day wildlife experience in search of European bison. Accompanied by an expert guide, explore the forests and clearings where these impressive animals have been reintroduced to the wild, looking for tracks and other signs of their presence along the way. Learn about the bison reintroduction programme, their behaviour and the wider Carpathian ecosystem while experiencing one of Romania’s wildest mountain landscapes. As with all genuinely wild animals, sightings cannot be guaranteed. (B)
Spend the morning at leisure in Brașov, with time to explore the historic Old Town, relax in one of its cafés or take in the views from Tâmpa Mountain. Later, head into the surrounding Carpathian forests with an experienced wildlife guide for an opportunity to observe wild brown bears in their natural habitat. Walk through the forest to a specially designed observation hide and wait quietly for bears to emerge. These are free-ranging wild animals, so sightings cannot be guaranteed, making each encounter a genuine wildlife experience. Return to Brașov afterwards. (B)
Enjoy some free time in Brașov, perhaps for a final stroll through the Old Town or some last-minute shopping, before transferring to Brașov Airport for your flight back to the UK. (B)
