Astana is like no other capital city in the world and also one of the most divisive – some proclaim it a masterpiece, others a monstrosity.
If one thing is for sure, though, it’s that this extraordinary city will leave an indelible mark on even the most hardened of travellers and quite simply must be seen to be believed.
Established as Kazakhstan’s capital in 1997, taking over from the historic Almaty, Astana has sprung out of the majestic Steppe landscape with a glut of futuristic skyscrapers and fantastical towers straight from the mind of the country’s ambitious president, Nursultan Nazarbayev, via the pen of British architects Foster and Partners.
Astana has been designed to true 21st-century specification with safe, clean streets lined with music-emitting bushes and artificial trees with illuminated branches, and no shortage of modern shops, restaurants, bars, attractions and landmarks to keep you busy while you make your mind up about this truly remarkable city.
