Cesis is considered by many to be the best preserved and most authentic example of the old, pre-war Latvia. With its labyrinthine narrow streets lined with humble, old, stone buildings and leisurely pace of life, a visit here is very much like stepping back into the past. The town makes for a wonderful stroll and there’s plenty to explore such as the crumbling castle ruins, the Vieinbas laukums square - shadowed by the eccentric Victory Monument, the 13th-century St Johns Church and the compelling Museum of History of Art. Cesis also lies just 35km from Sigulda – known as the ‘Switzerland of Latvia’ – and is an ideal base from which to discover the beauty of the surrounding Baltic countryside.
