The Mekong Delta is the southernmost region of Vietnam and the end point for the mighty Mekong which starts high in the Tibetan plateau travelling down through China, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia to end here at the South China Sea. The region is also known as ‘Vietnam’s bread basket’ due to its importance in the production of food for the country and any visit to the region will stand testament to this with views of rice fields and flower gardens at every turn.
The town of Can Tho is a great base from which to explore the Mekong region: head out on a small wooden boat navigated by local women through a maze of green waterways or alternatively rise early and head south to enjoy the spectacle and hustle of one of the many floating markets. Alternatively why not spend the night on a traditional sampan boat and really get off the beaten track in this beautfiful region.
