Novi Sad is Serbia's second city and the capital of the autonomous province of Vojvodina. Founded in 1694 on the banks of the Danube River, it grew to become such an important cultural, manufacturing and trading hub that it was given the nickname "Serbian Athens".
Today Novi Sad remains important industrial and financial hub. Much of it was destroyed or damaged in the 1848 revolution, but was beautifully restored over the following decades, and you can wander around the streets to see some stunning examples of 19th century architecture. Make sure to visit Stari Grad ("Old Town").
Culture abounds here, and the city has been selected as a European Capital of Culture for 2021. With a thriving arts and music scene, as well as 26 different ethnic groups making the city and the region their home, it's not hard to understand why.
