Oudomxay is one of the more accessible provinces in northern Laos, approximately five hours from Luang Prabang via Route 13. The region, which has rocky mountains cloaked in mist, is traversed by three major rivers: the Nam Ou, Nam Beng, and Nam Tha. It is also home to 23 ethnic minorities, including the Khmu, Hmong, and lowland Lao, each with their unique customs and dialects. In terms of temples, no trip to Oudomxay is complete without taking photographs at Phu That, which is located at the summit of a hill in the heart of Meuang Xay town. For local goods, visit the Productivity and Marketing Center, showcasing handmade items by villagers, including bags and clothing with natural dyes. About 11 kilometres from town on the road to Luang Prabang lies Tad Lak Sip-et, or '11 Kilometres Waterfall'. A popular spot for picnics and swimming, it's a cool retreat favoured by locals.
