Vientiane is a small unassuming capital city often overlooked over its more picturesque northern neighbour, Luang Prabang. However, the city has some interesting sites to visit all easily reached on foot. Rise early and watch the monks receiving their morning alms from the local residents and head to the colourful morning market of Talat Sao to see the weird and wonderful items on sale. Explore one of Vientiane’s most important sites, Wat Sisaket, with its impressive murals and ceiling art head across the road from to Wat Phra Kaeo originally built to house the Emerald Buddha now resident in Bangkok. Or cycle downstream along the banks of the mighty Mekong past homes and monasteries stopping for a cold drink along the way.
