Enjoy a free day to explore Ponta Delgada. The city has wonderfully preserved its historic beauty. Every turn of its cobbled streets brings in to view delightful buildings, cafes and shops, interspersed with some fascinating examples of brutalist architecture. Ponta Delgada is an extremely pleasant town to cover by foot. There are no big stores and virtually no international chains, so linger over an espresso in one of the many cafes around the Praça Gonçalo Velho Square and watch local life pass by. (B)

Enjoy an exciting full day to the volcano-rich Furnas Valley. Marvel at the giant crater lake, Lagoa das Furnas, which is populated by aquamarine water, and see several fumaroles and mud pools. Visit the village that sits in the valley and witness hot springs and geysers while touring the region. (B,L)

Sail out to the open waters of the Atlantic in search of sperm whales and dolphins. The sperm whale, native to the Azores, can put its head out of the water for a full eight minutes between dives, giving a great opportunity for everyone aboard to take some fantastic photos. Usually the boat is surrounded by playful dolphins leaping in and out of the waves. The afternoon is at leisure to explore the cobbled streets and historic buildings of Ponta Delgada. (B)
