Experience the diverse landscapes and rich cultural heritage of Montenegro on this carefully curated eight-day small group tour. Although small in size, Montenegro's geographical variety is vast, from the rugged mountains to the serene coastlines. Throughout this journey, encounter quaint medieval towns, beautiful national parks, pristine lakes, and some of the most breathtaking views in Europe.
This tour operates with a minimum of eight and a maximum of 16 passengers. On arrival transfer to your hotel in the capital city of Montenegro, Podgorica. In the afternoon, meet your guide and fellow travellers at 5pm for a brief introduction to the tour. After this, enjoy a guided walking tour of Podgorica, which offers a unique blend of modernity and tradition. Explore the Old Town with its Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian influences, including Ribnica Bridge and the Clock Tower. The tour ends with a welcome dinner at a local restaurant serving traditional Montenegrin cuisine. (D)
After breakfast, depart for the north of Montenegro, travelling through the striking Moraca Canyon, renowned for its dramatic cliffs and winding roads that follow the course of the Moraca River. Stop at the Moraca Monastery, one of Montenegro’s most significant Orthodox monasteries, dating back to the 13th century. Marvel at its well-preserved frescoes and tranquil surroundings. Continue to Biogradska Gora National Park, home to one of the last three primeval forests in Europe. After a short walk around the serene Biogradsko Lake, you will have the chance to rent a small boat to further explore the lake. Enjoy a lunch surrounded by the natural beauty of the park. In the afternoon, travel to Kolasin, a charming town nestled in the mountains, where you will check in for two nights. (B,L,D)
After breakfast, embark on an exhilarating jeep safari across the rugged terrains of Bjelasica Mountain. The journey takes you through lush meadows, dense forests, and traditional Montenegrin shepherds’ huts, known as katuns. Arrive at Eko Katun Vranjak, a settlement of quaint cottages that sit just below the peak of Troglava. Take in the panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, and for the adventurous, a short hike to the summit offers even more spectacular vistas. Enjoy a hearty lunch of traditional Montenegrin fare, prepared with fresh local ingredients, in the rustic setting of the Katun. After the jeep safari, return to Kolasin, where the evening is free for you to explore the town or relax. (B,L,D)
This morning, travel towards the breathtaking Tara River Canyon, the second deepest canyon in the world. Stop at the Djurdjevica Tara Bridge, an iconic structure offering incredible views over the canyon. For the brave, an optional zip-line ride over the canyon is available, giving you a bird’s-eye view of this natural wonder. Continue to Zabljak, the gateway to Durmitor National Park. Upon arrival, embark on a two-hour walking tour around the crystal-clear waters of Black Lake (Crno Jezero), set against the backdrop of towering peaks. The serene beauty of this glacial lake is truly captivating, especially in the evening light. Dinner will be at a cosy local restaurant, serving specialities from the northern region of Montenegro. After breakfast travel south to the renowned Ostrog Monastery, built into the sheer cliffs of Ostroška Greda. This sacred site attracts pilgrims from all over the Balkans and offers a chance to reflect and admire the incredible architecture seemingly carved from the mountain itself. Continue towards Skadar Lake National Park, where you’ll stop in Virpazar, a picturesque lakeside town. Board a boat for a scenic two-hour cruise on Skadar Lake, gliding past tiny islands and old monasteries. The lake is a haven for birdwatchers, as it’s home to a variety of rare species. After the boat ride, visit a local vineyard where you’ll taste Montenegrin wines, accompanied by traditional foods like prosciutto, cheese, and olives. End the day with a scenic drive along the Adriatic coast to reach Tivat, where you’ll check in for a three-night stay. (B)
Today begins with an adventurous drive up the winding, historic serpentine road that offers incredible views over the Bay of Kotor. Ascend to Lovcen National Park, where you can climb 461 steps to the mausoleum of Petar II Petrovic Njegos, Montenegro’s revered poet and leader. The views from the top are truly breathtaking, extending across the Montenegrin landscape and, on a clear day, even into Albania. After descending from the mountain, stop in the village of Njegusi, famous for its production of prosciutto and cheese. Here, you’ll visit a local family-run smokehouse to learn about the traditional drying processes and sample these delicious products. Continue to the former royal capital of Cetinje for a visit to the King Nikola’s Museum, where you’ll learn about Montenegro’s royal history. After a brief tour of Budva return to Tivat. (B)
After breakfast, travel to Kotor, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its medieval Old Town. Explore the cobbled streets, hidden squares, and historic buildings, including the 12th-century Cathedral of St. Tryphon. After some free time to explore, take a boat ride across Boka Bay to the island of Our Lady of the Rocks, a man-made island with a small church and museum. Next, visit the charming baroque town of Perast, where you’ll have time to stroll along the waterfront, admire the Venetian architecture, and enjoy lunch with views over the bay. Continue by coach to Risan, tracing its origins to the ancient settlement of Rhizon, the oldest settlement in the Bay of Kotor. Here visit the famous mosaics of Risan. In the late afternoon return to Tivat by ferry, crossing the bay and taking in the picturesque coastal scenery. In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner at a local restaurant. (B,L,D)
