Harstad under the midnight sun

Fly from the UK to Harstad/Narvik Airport in northern Norway. Pick up the hire car and drive to the city of Harstad - the gateway to the Lofoten islands.

DAY 2
VESTERÅLEN ISLANDS

Drive to the Vesterålen Islands, located just north of the Lofoten Islands and the Arctic Circle. This is a place defined by contrasts. The landscapes span from calm and peaceful beaches and farmlands to rugged, alpine mountains, dramatic fjords and wilderness.Take the time to admire these diverse vistas on today's drive to the small town of Andenes, at the northern tip of Andøya Island.  (B)

WHALE SAFARI
Sperm Whale in off the coast of Vesterålen

Whales are one of Vesterålen’s biggest draws. Nowhere else along the Norwegian coast is the continental shelf as close to the mainland as in Vesterålen and whale watching trips here have an amazing 95% success rate. Early this afternoon, visit the Whale Watching Centre to learn about these marine mammals before departing by boat on a guided whale watching safari.  (B)

ANDØYA ISLAND
Andøya Island

Drive the impressive Andøya National Scenic Route that runs between Bjørnskinn and Andenes. The road hugs the coastline where people have put down roots between the vast ocean and the jagged peaks. Take breaks to drink in the breathtaking views or to stroll along one of the many idyllic beaches along the way. In late summer, try the cloudberries that grow on the moorland or visit the Bleiksøya bird cliffs which, in early summer, is home to both sea eagles and over 40,000 puffins! (B)

VESTERÅLEN TO LOFOTEN
Leknes, Lofoten Islands

Depart the archipelago of Vesterålen and move towards the world renowned Lofoten Islands. The journey will include a ferry crossing between Melbu and Fiskebøl. In Lofoten, continue on to Leknes for an unforgettable experience staying in an authentic rorbu - one of the characteristic red, wooden fishermen houses, typically built on stilts on the sea. (B)

THE LOFOTEN ISLANDS

Today, discover the Lofoten islands, driving the Lofoten National Scenic Route from Leknes down to Å, where we highly recommend a visit to the Stockfish Museum. Experience a journey amid breathtaking and stark natural surroundings. The combination of the untamed ocean, craggy mountains, white sand beaches and tiny fishing villages never fail to enchant visitors. Spend a secind night in  the fishing village of Reine, easily one of the most iconically photographed villages in the whole archipelago. (B)

SVOLVÆR – THE CAPITAL OF LOFOTEN

Take the Lofoten National Scenic Route in the opposite direction today to reach Svolvær, an important fishing port and trading centre in the archipelago. We recommend a side-trip to visit Henningsvær village, set dramatically across several islets that sprawl out into the ocean. If you are fond of the Vikings, do not miss a visit to the Lofotr Viking museum, which is on the way. Kabelvåg is also worth a visit, especially its art gallery and its church overlooking the sea. (B)

LOFOTEN ARCHIPELAGO
Svolvær harbour
