Nowhere else along the Norwegian coast is the continental shelf as close to the mainland as in Vesterålen and whale watching trips here have an amazing 95% success rate. Drive the impressive Andøya National Scenic Route that runs between Bjørnskinn and Andenes. The road hugs the coastline where people have put down roots between the vast ocean and the jagged peaks. In late summer, try the cloudberries that grow on the moorland or visit the Bleiksøya bird cliffs which, in early summer, is home to both sea eagles and over 40,000 puffins! (B)

Take the Lofoten National Scenic Route in the opposite direction today to reach Svolvær, an important fishing port and trading centre in the archipelago. We recommend a side-trip to visit Henningsvær village, set dramatically across several islets that sprawl out into the ocean. If you are fond of the Vikings, do not miss a visit to the Lofotr Viking museum, which is on the way. Kabelvåg is also worth a visit, especially its art gallery and its church overlooking the sea.
