The picturesque port town of Ålesund, which stretches whimsically across several islands out into the Atlantic Ocean, is considered one of Norway’s most beautiful towns. The city is famous for its impressive Art Nouveau architecture which was used to rebuild much of the city after a devastating fire in 1904. Head up to Mount Askla for panoramic views of the city, surrounding fjord and mountains or visit one of the many museums on offer. Hiking and boat trips are two popular ways to take in the incredible scenery of this area.
Ålesund is also viewed the gateway to the spectacular Geirangerfjord, considered one of the most beautiful fjords in the country. The fjord is know for its iconic S shape, for its high waterfalls and dramatic fjord landscape, which has earned it a spot of UNESCO's World Heritage site list.
