The central Bumthang region is regarded as the religious heartland of Bhutan with many of its most sacred sites located here. Said to be the first region of Bhutan to be inhabited, it is made up of four valleys – Ura, Chumey, Tang and Choekhor – the region has a large farming community due to its fertile soil so fields of buckwheat, potatoes and large apple orchards are a common sight.
The Bumthang Valleys offer a good range of day hikes for those wanting to explore a little on foot but without the need for a tent. And if that generates a thirst, why not head to the Red Panda micro-brewery to learn all about the brewing process and maybe sample the goods, just a little!
